| Upright vs Chest Freezer
I am in the market for a freezer but don't know what is the better idea. The freezer would be in my house and the area is just big enough for a 5 cubit chest freezer or a much larger upright freezer. A upright freezer would be more money but would give me at least 3xs the amount of freezer space. What are some of yalls pros and cons about each? What would you recommend? TIA! Ps I would like to start putting a deer, half a cow and quite a bit of chicken in there yearly. Not to mention veggies, breads, and so on. |

I've had both - currently have an upright and would never go back to a chest. It is more expensive - we got a great deal on Craiglist - but it SOOOOOO much easier to find stuff in it. i sort the shelves by type of food - fruits/veggies, meat, breads and desserts. You get the idea. Love my freezer!

I love my upright freezer- it is a little one 3/4 tall but I will never go back to a chest style no matter the price. Uprights let you see what is in the freezer so you will loose less to freezer burn or "i forgot that was in there" and I can see what I need at a glance. The chest freezer that we had was larger and cheaper but I am short 5'3" and always felt like I was going to "fall" in when I needed something from the bottom... that's my take on the 2 freezers.... |

I got a upright freezer on 6/7/12. A birthday present to myself. Best thing I ever did.I was going to get a chest freezer for cash, then I won a gift card for home depot from coke rewards so I purchased an upright 13.7 cubic ft.self defrosting.Check the sales before you purchase.

Definitely upright. My mom had a chest, stuff always got lost and I hated bending over to get in it. When I got one I bought upright and it's so much better!

Are there any features that yall think are musts? Also what size shod I go for? Should I start out with small/cheap or should I just bite the bullet and go for big? How many freezers do most of yall have and what sizes?

I have a chest, and I like it, but I would like an upright. I think having lots of baskets to help organize is a must.

I would opt for self defrosting...upright...I have two of them..one is not self defrost and it's a pain to do so IMHO..my newest one also has the alarm feature to let you know when it loses power..LOVE that one as I lost a lot of meat a couple years back when a power failure affected my freezer and I had no clue until I started smelling something funny in the garage.

I have two uprights and never ever want another chest. Frankly, I don't think my back can take all the bending it took to find anything in it again. Definitely do the self defrosting.

I've had both, and found pros & cons about each. I have a harder time stuffing the upright full because you have to stack it all just right. Things try to jump out when I open the door. I guess the chest freezer just worked through gravity, things weren't going to jump out vertically. The upright has tons of frost that I never experienced with my chest freezer. I haven't defrosted yet, so I can't vouch for that experience. I like the door shelves on my upright, but stuff in the door doesn't get quite as frozen. The upright is definitely a space saver. More room for junk in my garage. Lol

I had a chest freezer for 6 years and that was because it was a house warming gift. No complaints right?! Well I found myself throwing out some great food items. I also realized as I age ( gracefully of course) I am more visual. I just bought an upright this summer and already has made a huge difference. All of the otter pops are now in one place . Upright for sure!!! |

Uprights are not as energy efficient, Just keep that in mind. We have a chest but my next one will be upright (when we own a house with a garage!
