I think you'll find a wide variation on meat pricing depending where you live. If you have a restaurant supply store that is open to the public, you probably want to go there. Some people go to smaller "meat market" type places, but the only one I had any experience with, the quality was very iffy, so before you stock up from anyplace new, buy a small amount first and make sure you like it. I'm horrible when buying meats, because my brain is stuck on sale prices I paid 20 years ago LOL. Ask some members on the "state deals" forums who live in your part of the country what they pay. Beef prices in Texas are probably very different than Boston.

When I am looking to stock up, I am trying to find the best sales possible. So, for a whole chicken if it isn't oven stuffer, then $.69 a pound if it is an oven stuffer then anywhere from $.78-$.99 cents a pound.

For chicken legs, definitely under a $1.00

For my pork chops both boneless and bone-in $1.99 or less

Beef roasts less than $2.50 a pound

Pork roast anywhere from $1.50-2.30 a pound

Sauasge has to be $1.99 or less, but I have been getting lucky with the markdowns lately and have gotten several packages for $.98 a pound.

Sometimes, I will get lucky and find the prices on sale or markdown less, then I buy more. These are the prices that I will buy meat at. HTH

I agree with the previous post (vanna8882). She pretty much nailed the "benchmark" prices. I live in Denver and both Safeway and KingSoopers have a "clearance section" for meat. If they overstock on sale meat and it doesn't sell within a couple days, it's put on clearance for an additional 30% off. You pretty much need to use it that day, or get it in the freezer. I've gotten rib-eye steaks for $1.50 a lb, and pork chops for $1 lb in the past.
I find I need to get there early in the day...but there are deals to be had on meat!

Generally my number is $1.99 per pound, except for bone in chicken breasts, for those it's 99 per pound. This number is getting harder to find, though, as meat prices just keep going up.

If you have a Sam's club near you and have a business membership (or know someone who does!) you can find pretty decent deals on their marked down meats early in the morning. Almost gotta be there when they open at 7:00 though.

Good luck!

@simplygolden...I used to see a lot of coupons for ground turkey...but i have not seen any in a long time. If you are up for it - (I buy turkeys at the holidays for $5 and) you can make your own.
Ground Beef - I use the 93% lean and I try to get that for $2.50 or less per pound.

Recently my Albertson's had boneless skinless butcher block chicken breasts for 1.67lb and that's the cheapest I've seen it in a while so I stocked up.

My go to price for nearly everything is 99 cents a pound. I buy a lot of boneless, skinless chicken breast, pork chops, and whole cut up fryers. When we want red meat I can usually get brisket or skirt steak for under a buck a pound.

Looking at the ads I've noticed about everything is cheaper in Dallas than here in West Texas.

I don't think I've ever seen chicken for .99/lb up here in the midwest. Cost of living is higher up here usually, so that might be why.

I've just started with this, but right now my goal for most meats is $2 or less a lb. I recently got some marked down ground chuck for $2.22 a lb and considered that pretty decent. For chicken, definitely under $1 a lb, and for whole chickens, under .89 a lb. Pork chops I am seeing sales for $1.79lb, so I would say $1.50 would be stock up.

It is very difficult to nail down stock up prices when prices seem to be rising like crazy lately. However, here is my list for stocking up:

Small whole chicken = 88 cents/lb usually get that at Sam's Club for that price, used to be able to get them for 69 cents/lb

Chicken legs = 88 cents/lb usually at Meijer

Boneless or bone in pork chop = under $2/lb

Beef steaks $2.50/lb these have been all over the place lately so I haven't really gotten this cut of meat in a while!

Beef roast = under $2/lb

Pork roast = $1.69/lb

Sausage = under $2/lb

Ground chuck/beef = under $2/lb, lately though that has been hard to find so it looks like I am going to have move the price point for this up to under $2.30/lb

Boneless/Skinless Chicken breasts = under $2/lb...love it when it is on sale for $1.49/lb but that is few and far between.

bone in chicken breasts = under $1/lb.

Turkey = under $2/lb in the off holiday season, during the holiday season I will get them for under $1/lb

I am always combing the meat display looking for "manager's specials" or clearance meat because I will clear the shelf if I find a good deal. Usually bring it home and stick it right in my freezer.

I happened to be walking by the butcher counter at Kroger one night right before they closed. The young man working was probably about to throw out the meat, when he asked if I wanted the ground beef from that day for $.99/lb.

Maybe try going to the meat counter while they are cleaning out the case?

these are all ymmv, but if you live by any of these stores, it might be worth checking these out-

after 6, Sam's starts marking down whatever meats they want to get rid of for the day & what they don't sell by 6 the next day they donate, so they are always happy to see people picking it up

after 8, meijer marks down all their pre cut deli meat to a buck a pound

after 7(or maybe it's 8? can't remember, sorry ) kroger puts all their unsold rotisserie and fried chix on sale for really cheap too, i think it's a couple bux for the entire bird

For chicken I pay no more than 60 cents a lb. For pork $1 lb, for beef it is usually 1.25 to 2 lb. Not sure where you are located, but Harvey's has store meat coupons every three months for $3 off a $8 dollar purchase in the meat department. I pair that with the awesome meat sales they always have that week and stock. One tip wrap old fashion way in wax and freezer paper and you will not have to worry about freezer burn for a year! Only meat that I have problems with getting a good price on is cube steak
