Can you freeze yogurt cups?

Does anyone know if you can freeze yogurt cups? Or drinkable yogurt? I received several YoBaby IP's in a trade, but they have a short exp date. I'd hate to waste the coupons b/c they're not so easy to come by, but I'd also hate to buy the yogurt and have any go to waste.

I freeze yogurt cups all the time. I just thaw them out a little bit and eat them like a frozen treat more than yogurt. I love them this way! I think if you thaw them out completely they lose texture quality.

Yogurt can be frozen. The texture and taste is actually pretty decent.

My kids love the go-gurt style yogurts frozen.

One thing to note, the live active cultures in yogurt do not survive in the freezer so that benefit to eating yogurt is lost if you freeze it.

1/2 my freezer right now is frozen yogurt, a ton of Go-Gurt and then a bunch of the Yoplait Yogurt that was on clearance for .99c a six pack at my Fred Meyer {Imagine what I'd have saved if I was using coupons when I bought it!} Frozen go-gurts are awesome. On a hot day I think the go-gurts are a great treat and way more nutrients, even with dead lil cultures, than most of the popsicles out there.

When I'm craving ice cream I can usually get away with eating one of the little frozen yogurt cups. I take this to work and eat it at 3:00 in the afternoon which is my sugar craving time of day.

You can freeze yogurt, but I was told that it does not extend the expiration date.

My teenage daughter does this . . .

in fact it is the only way she will eat yogurt. She pops it in her lunch box for school and it is half frozen still at lunch. She loves it!

Is that true? That is doesnt extend the exp. date? Id love to be able to freeze it to make it last longer. We have a lot of Dora ones that will expire soon.

Stonyfield Yogurt - Frequently Asked Questions

Quote:
Does freezing yogurt destroy or alter the effectiveness of the live cultures?
You can freeze a cup of yogurt. A cup of yogurt that has been frozen and thawed will have a different look and texture than fresh yogurt. The cultures become dormant when frozen, but once thawed either in the refrigerator or by your body heat when ingested; they will become live and active once again. There will be a few cultures that do die, but there are so many billions in our products, that it is truly insignificant.
So that's good news, many of the cultures come back to life. ZOMBIE YOGURT.

Cold Storage Chart: Dairy

The link above says that yogurt stays good in the fridge for 7 - 14 days but 1 to 2 months frozen, so that's certainly extending the expiration dates.

Also found:

Quote:
Can DANNON Yogurt Be Frozen? It’s okay to freeze yogurt overnight to pack in a lunch for the following day. However, it won’t be as smooth and creamy as yogurt fresh from the refrigerator. The yogurt may undergo some changes in texture and/or taste. Because some individuals do not find these changes to their liking, it is recommended that you “test freeze” a couple of tablespoons in a small cup before freezing alarge quantity. When freezing DANNON Fruit-on-the-Bottom Yogurt, be sure to stir before freezing for the best results. Some parents like to freeze DANNON DANIMALS after pushing a small “popsicle” stick through the lid to make a fun snack for kids. Our products retain their very best quality until the date stamped on the container, the“sell by” date (the last day the container can be sold by the retailer). When properly refrigerated, our yogurt will remain fresh for seven days beyond that date.
Quote:
Freezing Yogurt
Package in freezer containers. Seal and freeze. The fruit and sugar in flavored yogurt help to preserve and stabilize the yogurt. When thawed it may taste more acidic. (Note: Commercially frozen yogurt and soft-serve frozen yogurt have a different texture than home frozen yogurt.)
And I found a tip for those small kids cups of yogurt, stab a popsicle stick through the top before you freeze it and you'll have a frozen yogurt popsicle for the kids!

The main concern I found when reading up on the subject was that plain yogurt and the like tend to seperate, though they can be stirred, and tasting it with a spoon may make it apparent it was frozen previously, using it in a recipe would make it not as notice'able.

HOWEVER I think most people are referring to the fruit and sweetened type of yogurt and those are much more stable when frozen and/or thawed.

We've had great success freezing cups of yogurt and Go-Gurts, and nothing I've found suggests that freezing doesn't extend the expiration date.

Remember, your household freezer doesn't keep stuff good as long as a "deep freeze" or a freezer that is only rarely opened. Temperatures are maintained when the door is nearly always shut and the food stays good longer.

No prob, I actually enjoy finding answers to questions, I like to think I'm broadening my horizons.

Think of all the information we wouldn't have in our heads if not for Google or Wiki???

Would we all have hopped in our cars to learn "can you freeze yogurt" from the library? Or the crap shoot of asking someone and risking learning an urban legend.

The knowledge is out there, for the taking, and I like putting that to good use.

My fear is that I come off as a know-it-all, so I try to find links and show that I'm quoting other sources not just making it up as I go along....though if it's a .pdf or other source I'm sometimes left with just responding and saying "after looking I found..."

I'd like my own Question thread!

My neighbor told me that the yoplait whips are a great ice cream substitute when frozen. I just bought some, but haven't tried them yet.

I believe it's the Whips that are now advertising freezing them or enjoying them out of the fridge. I personally use whatever I find on manager mark-down at Kroger. But I'd love to try the Whips frozen too. Right now I'm plowing through TONS of the Fiber One Yogurt. The lime flavor is exceptionally good frozen!

DOH!! I hadn't thought of this and have been letting my expired Activia q's go to waste!! Love the idea for the go-gurts. This will be much better for us in the summer than those popsicles!! I love ice cream. Maybe this will take my cravings away but sometimes ya just GOTTA have the real thing! I'll try freezing some chocolate ones and see how that goes. Thank you!

I'm so crazy for my vanilla frozen yoplaits that I use a grapefruit spoon to eat one every day. I can't wait for it to thaw!

I got several of the gogurts on markdown that were about 5 days to exp.
I have several $1/2 so got them .50/box. They are in the deep freezer and the kids LOVE them. I do not care for yogurt, but like it frozen.
