This is for when nothing else is working and the rash is just getting worse and worse. Change diaper and clean thoroughly, no baby wipes if bum is too sensitive just wet towels. Let air dry for a few moments. Here's the crazy part, but it's straight from our Pediatrician. Spread a thin coating of Maalox on the rash, and any red area. Let that sit for a moment or two. Spread a THICK coat of Regular Desitin on top of the Maalox. This will be gooey and sooooo messy, have something ready to clean off your hand! Put a generous sprinkling of Johnsons Baby Powder. Seal it up and you're done. For now, that is. Plan on repeating this process every single time they so much as pee or poo. If you don't catch it and change them right away, it'll take even longer to heal that rash. Give this a day or two to really start working. Our 2nd child got a horrible diaper rash very often so I was doing this a lot! If all else fails, go get some Triple Paste Cream. It's always our last resort, but this trick usually saves us from having to buy it. It's sooooooooo expensive! ![]() Good Luck!

My friend's pedi also says this but he says buy old timey tub desitin and pre-mix it with the maalox. Maalox draws out the acids from the waste and the desitin is the moisture barrier. We use a prescription cream and 1 lb of it is $15 for our copay but it is based on the same principle as this home remedy (just ends up being cheaper for us b/c of the rx)

We have a local pharmacy that mixes Aquafor and Maalox and sells it over the counter.

Poor baby. Could he have a sensitivity to the diapers themselves? Or maybe something he is drinking is acidic? My niece (who we raised until she was 18 months old) had THE worst diaper rash. Desitin made it worse until she started to bleed! We gave her lots of warm baths and kept her diaper off as much as possible. Now, my diaper tricks are: Don't use baby wipes--I use washcloths and water, everytime. Witch Hazel (If the skin is not broken) Caldescene (Pink bottle of powder sold in CVS--if you'd rather purchase a product. This stuff is great. It coats the dry skin to wick moisture off helping the skin to dry.) Lots of time without a diaper on! (So for little babes, I let them lay on a large lappad--and for mobile babes, I let them walk around with a prefold cloth diaper, Snappied, without a waterproof cover.

My Dr told me never to use baby powder. He kinda freaked me out. He said that they can inhale the powder and cause some kind of cancer (female) in little girls later in life. I have always used baby powder. Now I don't because I don't know if he is just giving me his personal opinion or what.

I was always told to not use baby power either. I put A&D on dd twice a day, and she is a year old...never has had a rash.

One time my dd had a horrible rash and this is what someone told me to do and was wonderful.. #1- baked flour. Bake the flour till slighly brown then allow to cool. Use instead of baby powder. #2-Regular storebought cornstarch. Again, works wonderfully! I've used both of these and had great quick results. and they are basically free cause you should have these in your kitchen anyways. As far as baby powder goes, I never used it on dd untill she was almost a year old. Now what I do is sprinkle it on the diaper then put it on her... never directly on her. keeps the dust down. Either way- I've never seen any hard scientifc evidence against baby powder. that's just me.

You can also put baking powder in a bath to take the sting out of a rash.

One time when I was little I had a bad rash but was 7 or 8. I woke up in th emiddle of the night and knew my mom put white powder she cooks with "down there" when I was irritated and I didn't want to wake my mom up so I put straight baking soda on it. SCREAMED SO LOUD I woke the house up. Maybe fine in bathwater, but directly on a rash and i was yelpin! I would be very leery of putting baked flour on a rash...if it is yeast rash what if it fed the yeast???

I second the corn starch for rashes! My dd broke out in a horrible rash and no diaper cream I used touched it--my mom finally told me about using corn starch in her diaper--the rash cleared up within two days!! It can be messy but oh so worth it!

Corn starch is awesome. I've used lotrimun for yeast rashes instead of having to get the prescription cream. I also used vasoline with every change.

Lanah only got a rash a couple of times---from Pampers brand. Boudreaux's worked on her....the second time was when she was with friends and they grabbed their daughter's diaper and stuck on her not knowing she was allergic to the Pamper...we used the Boudreaux's then as well and bam it was gone. We had a nanny her first year and she was an older woman who had told us about the flour remedy but we never really needed it. I have a couple of kids in my classroom that have really bad stomach issues and they get rashes and their peds recommended maalox mixed with aquaphor. It is messy but it does seem to work like a champ. We never used powder because I read it was bad as were wipes. Something about the wipes messing up the skins natural ph...So wipes were used only on messy poops when we weren't home or somewhere we could easily have access to mild soap and a clean cloth. Now wipes are used on faces and hands around here because I can't resist a freebie! |

Just plain old Crisco works too! As for using an ointment daily when there is no rash/no reason, is that ok? OP stated that she used A n D 2x a day for a year? I'm not sure, but that doesn't seem like a good idea. JMO, Steph

I use wipes, all kinds and never had a problem ... good bums run in our family I guess ... but my son does get HORRIBLE diaper rash from Luvs (bummer cause Pampers fit him best, and gosh darn if Luvs aren't exactly the same except for the deoderant). When he has a little rash I make sure he soaks nightly in the tub for about 20 minutes. Baking soda is a wonderful soak aid - you can also use dry milk (though this is better just as a moisturizing bath). I let him dry out - he's a little tinkler so I typically give him a rub down on his changing pad (good time for a scalp rub, hair combing, brushing teeth ...) and then put cornstarch baby powder on (I use the target stuff) him - I put it in my hand and then pat it on to keep the dust down and to get it around the base of the private parts (probably a bigger deal for those with boys). That's it. I use Desitin sparingly - applying only once or twice a day. I also make sure to allow him to air dry between changes - even disposable wipes can make the skin surprisingly damp. We keep a large supply of wash clothes to pat dry the area if we are in a rush. Sometimes I think the overuse of diaper rash treatments might lead to more rashes ... stick to one treatment and use it sparingly (only as needed). For babies that bleed when wiped ... Walmart has an oatmeal diaper rash treatment that comes in a spray form - we used that when he had diarrhea and screamed even when his butt hit the bathwater.

Ok, everyone has a different opinion and every child is different so you have to find what works for your kids. But... I swear by bag balm. It comes in a green tin can and is petroleum based I believe. It was developed as a treatment for dry cow udders and it works wonderful for diaper rash! It usually clears it up in a day or two. Its all I will use anymore.

We use cloth diapers, Bum Genius to be exact. The super absorbant microfiber inside keeps DD super dry. With these, you're not supposed to use gunky creams... as it leaves a coating in the diaper that's hard to wash out. Zinc Oxide based ointments are better in this case. We use straight Zinc, which is like a buck and normally around 40% when rash creams have only 10%. I've also done the Maalox thing, straight from the pediatrician, too. However, in my older DD's worst rash, I got some Nystatin from the pedi. It's less than $1 (Rx), but any time I suspect it's yeast, that kills it instantly. Just be careful not to over use it, as it becomes less effective in that case. Also, you can make your own baby wipes (recipes ALL over the net) with essential oils or a touch of vinegar, which helps to cut down on the yeast and prevents those kinds of rashes!

I wipe my daughter during EVERY diaper change.. I know some parents only doing it when they poo (sorry but I think that's gross.. you don't wipe yourself only when you poo do you??!?) and every night I put diaper rash cream on her bum.. So far no diaper rash.. I heard corn starch was really good for diaper rash too.

When my daughter had a diaper rash that I just couldn't get rid of my doctor told me to wash her bum in the sink with my bare hands and then just pat her dry. It worked right away. |

Another remedy is plain old sunshine and air. My mother swears by it, my sister had horrible rash when she was little so they sat out on the deck with her butt to the sun. I tried it with my son and it worked. Obviously, if it's cold, sit next to a large window.

oatmeal baths too. But lots of nakey time, especially in the sun when it's warm enough, works best. |
