I did this and my FREE Garmin GPS is on the way. After I applied for the card I called to make sure it was a real deal. They said of course -it is an offer through a third party to get more customers for Discover card. I made my "activation purchase" two days ago by buying a Coke which of course I will pay off in full. I just got the confirmation that my GPS is on the way.

I could Not be happier with it - it's my first GPS - for $99.
( I belong to BB 'Rewards' program, signed up for 'Birthday' thingy (mine was the 13th], and signed up for 'NASCAR' thingy - all free. It was on sale for $149, got a Garmin BB coupon for $50-off any Garmin for the BB NASCAR signup, and got triple-rewards for my birthday. Bottom line - got it for $99 + 'Rewards' points = enough to get a $10 BB cash certif. + 'Geek Squad' took it out to car and demonstrated how to set it up and use it, with no charge. This Is NOT a plug for BB or Garmin - only about what I got, how, and why I bought it. )

I have used it locally to find a business I needed to find, on Friday, took me right there. It has 3 modes of use - vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian. You can carry it with you if you're walking. You can 'store' - a 'home' address as a starting point; a route you traveled and want it to remember; or a destination, if you want to return to it (works great if you are a Man and don't want to keep hearing DW saying - 'You're lost again, aren't you?', when we really are, now I can blame it on Garmin). It also has a choice between 'Fastest' and 'Shortest' route' ('Shortest' worked for me, when tested, helped me avoid a lot of the tourist traffic, if I hadn't known my way.) I have played with this thing so much in the last 3 days I'm surprised I haven't distroyed the batteries. (Yep! You guessed it - it's a Boy-Toy. Guilty!)

If you can get this for free, by all means, if you've never had one before - IMHO - go for it. Again - IMHO - remember, applying for another credit card will affect your credit score. Just be careful, be sure, and know what you are doing.

My limited experience with the Garmin nuvi 200: Has a battery like of 4-5 hours; comes with a car recharger, no plug-in 110v recharger; You can download, for Free, the latest Garmin sofware/map updates [mine said 2009 after]; it has so many bells-and-whistles learning how to use it is almost like when you got your first computer, started playing with it, finally found out what it really can do, and couldn't get off it.

CAVEATS - offered IMHO Only:
- Updating the GPS took me 5 hrs on the computer (cable connection - Do Not try this is you have a dial-up connection!). But, I run 2 firewalls, a full A/V check of all downloads and accesses, ZoneAlarm, and 'High' IE7 security settings - all of which require approval for any access or download. The Garmin update d'l's in segments and I had to 'Allow' each segment/access. I should have disabled/shutdown most of my protection to make it go faster.
IMHO - Consider this when you do your update - if you feel safe to do so - If you have a home network, make sure that no one else is on-line when you do the update - then rebooot, clear all caches, disable any email/software/Windows/A/V updates that you have running, and disable your A/V software - while you do the update. This is a dangerous step to take, but should speed up your Garmin update.
- My Garmin did not come with a 'Garmin-USB' connection cable. I used my 'camera-USB' connection cable that came with my HP Photosmart 945 camera. It worked, connected, and d/l'ed perfectly. I also tested my Palm-USB connection cable to connect to the Garmin site - it did, but I disconnected and did not try any download. I Do Not suggest anyone try this unless you are comfortable with what you are doing and the consideration you may distroy your GPS. It worked for me.
- Battery Recharge: When I started my Garmin update my battery 'bar'-life was at 3-bars. I was concerned the Garmin would run out of battery before the update was complete - it did not. When the 5-hr update was done my Garmin battery showed a battery with 5-bars. My conclusion - the Garmin just may be able to recharge from a computer USB port - IMHO - but, I can not find or verify this.


IMHO - If you can get this thing for free, and have never had a GPS, then, Get It! It only does the continental US states. You'll need a higher-end/priced model if you want to go to Canada, Pureto Rico, or Hawaii. But, It's a great starting/learning point. I really do like mine - and, yes, i'm still playing with it (the GPS, silly). Enjoy

I have a hand held Garmin that I bought around Christmas to do geocashing with but figured if I can get another one with a screen for FREE, why not. Figured we could mount it in the truck when we're going to drag race or show the bikes somewhere.

Just to let everyone I know I got my FREE GPS Garmin TODAY. As soon as I qualified (activated card by making small purchase) they notified me that it would take 6- 8 weeks. The I got an email the other day that it was shipped by DHL but since we don't have DHL here it was delivered by USPS.

So everyone- just like I said- THIS DEAL IS REAL AND I HAVE A FREE GARMIN GPS!!!!!! It was not some sort of scam

how do you like geocacheing? we got a gps for christmas just for this, but summer is slipping away and we have yet to have a chance to try geocacheing. i think the kids would love it though.

We LOVE geocaching!!! We take the TW's (Yamaha enduros that get 75 mpg) and go have a cheap day of fun. With all the trail sizes and post it notes, I always have tons of stuff to put in the caches. This last weekend we got some better things- small radio with ear bugs and new batteries, some travel sized dominoes and I got a new dragonfly keychain for my best friend who loves dragonflies. Oh the other day I also got a magnet that says something about geocaching and came from someone in New Jersey!!!

Really cheap fun on bikes, four wheelers or motorcycles.

Yes, when the card comes to you, call and activate it. Then go make a purchase with it- can be just a coke or gum or WHATEVER. Then, and maybe not immediately you will receive an email from gpsoffer or something like that saying that you qualified. After a month or so you will get another email saying it was shipped DHL and then wait and you have it!!!!

So this won't affect my credit? I have very good credit and I thought the guy at the bank said that just by applying and getting approved shows that you need money or something. If it doesn't hurt it I want it!!

People seem to be split on this subject on whether or not it affects your credit score or not. I KNOW that when I used to cancel my cards, therefore DECREASING the amount of available credit open to me, my score stayed the same or got lower. As soon as I started leaving them open, my score shot up to 800 (and no I didn't do anything else different).

I was told that the more available credit you have OPEN compared to your debt is what determines your credit score. So if I have 50,000 open to me via credit cards, loans, etc and I only OWE 12,000 then of course my score is going to be 800 or better.

That is a personal decision on your part to open another credit card or not. It just makes my score go up. Actually the way it works is- when you apply for a credit card- your score goes down (by how much I don't know), but then when you get the card and it has 11,500 credit limit, your score goes up because that is just that much more money that you have available to you

i reaad somewhere else that you can have more than one discover card. you are allowed to apply for a new one like once every three months or somethinglike that.
