I really coud use a gps as i have moved to a new location and really get lost easily, hmmm maybe i should try it

I already got mine as well - a couple months ago. No additional bills or charges. The GPS offer is third party & has nothing to do with Discover. They get a kickback referral for getting you to sign up as the card company knows that most people are irresponsible with credit and they will get a number of people to sign up use the card & rack up finance charges.

I got it, activated it and charged a couple items. When my billing cycle rolled around they verified that it had been used. I paid the bill and they validated my offer. My GPS showed up the week after I received the email from mygpsoffers.com indicating that I had met all the terms & conditions of their offer.

Totally not a scam & absolutely worth it IMO. My wife has the unit & it is much better than the Tomtom ONE 3rd edition that I have & am currently having issues with.

I agree with 2vette2camaro on this one. Don't apply for it if your credit isn't good and you know you won't be approved. As for you and your DH applying for the credit card, it's fine. DH and I did it, and do this with other rewards type cards for points/miles and it's fine, as long as you both qualify. As for what you said about open credit increasing your score, that's the rule of thumb that I go by. We never cancel credit cards because that adversely affects your credit score.

In any event, I bought a soda on the credit card and got a free GPS. The card's now in a drawer somewhere. DH did the same and we are waiting on his.

I was a lender for 7 years so I can tell you a little bit about how applying for credit cards can effect your credit. I have been out of lending for a little over a year so some of these points may have updated or changed due to various changes in the industry.

1. Anytime you apply for credit, you will have a 'hit' on your credit score. Applying for any type of credit will drop your credit score 4 points (this is what it was a few years ago I believe it is still the same). So if you are someone who consistently open new accounts, your credit score will be dinged each time you apply. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is something to be aware of when applying for new accounts.

2. Debt ratio--- Credit cards are considered "revolving debt" meaning the balance can go up or down depending on how you run it up or pay it off. Credit cards begin to negatively effect your credit score when you start going over approx 50% of your debt limit. For example: You have $50,000 in open credit between all of your credit cards, if you would owe $5,000 on your credit cards your debt ratio for your credit cards is 10%. Lets say you owe $25,000 on the credit cards, you are at 50% debt ratio. If you were to cancel one of your cards that had a $10,000 limit you would have a new open credit line of $40,000. Having that same $25,000 in credit card debt would now put you at 62.5% debt ratio or over the 50% limit. Creditors start to look at this as if you are unable to pay your bills and therefore you could be a credit risk. This negatively impacts your credit score too. In the last example, that debt ratio would begin to drop your credit score.

Your mortgage loan and a car loan would be considered closed end accounts so you are making payments on them to decrease the balance. The important thing here is to pay your bills on time! Even one late payment could really screw things up, especially on the home loan.

Things like bankruptcy(obviously) garnishments, collection accounts etc.. will negatively affect your credit.

3. Credit scores are a complex matrix that as far as I know, no one knows how they are calculated other than the computers that do the calculating. There are rules of thumbs you can follow but there are many other factors involved (some listed above)

It is a good idea to check your credit report at least once a year. Do not pay for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the government site to check this information https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

IMHO it is NOT a good idea to open various lines of credit you are not going to use. As a lender, we used to look at high lines of credit as a risk b/c while you may not use it at the moment, you could potentially run it up and get yourself in trouble therefore becoming a credit risk. Additionally, having more open accounts that you never use could potentially put you at risk for identity theft--if you are not paying attention to these accounts you would never know if there was fraudulant activity on your accounts. IMHO you should find a happy medium and only you can decide what you are comfortable with.

I just got mine today too!!! Gonna go buy something now. Sounds like once we make a purchase we should get an email from mygpsoffer.com within the next couple days(?).

It will take a few days but not too long to get the email from www.mygpsoffer.com. I assure you it WILL come. If you guys want I can post a copy of the email I received. Now it did take almost a month or more to actually RECEIVE the GPS but well worth it.

I am under the impression that there is no minimum amount to charge. Just activate and use once for any amount. Not sure though because I have not gotten the GPS e-mail yet
