These offers have great value when like this one they include the costly super high markup test strips.

Most meters often have free coups wyb strips, or are free AR. Used to be good deals b/c the meter usually came w/10 strip starter pack. Now most meters don't include test strip starter packs. In many States you also have to pay tax on the meter, but if your MD writes a Rx (not required) for meter and/or strips, then there's no tax (a significant savings).

Free meters are promos to get you 'hooked' into buying their strips. Generic store brand strips (only for applicable meters) are generally 50-60% lower cost. Many only require a .6 blood sample (less blood & less painful then many major brand meters).

The smallest blood sample is .3 from 2 branded meters: Freestyle & BD. BD strips are often a few $s lower retail than Freestyle, but Freestyle is often lower when on sale and/or AC. Even at regular retail IMO Freestyle's a better value than BD b/c less likely to 'error out' on a strip. Most Mfrs will give you free replacement on strips that 'error out' but you might forget to request each month.

Some choose a meter due to a preference on the lancing device or lancets. Unlike test strips though, you can use brand X lancing device with Brand Y meter. That's an individual choice as to which is the best grip/stability for each person. Most lancing devices accept other brand lancets too (not all).

I use Freestyle meters, Freestyle lancing device, & BD Ultra Fine lancets. Especially in cold weather, the smaller blood sample to me equals less errors, less pain, & less bruising.

If you check with your insurance carrier you might find out that some test strips come with different co-pays. I use a One Touch and the co-pay is generic for those and the Freestyle meters. It just depends on your insurance carrier. It does not hurt to ask before you get a new meter. I have this One Touch Ultra 2 and a One Touch Ultra Smart and like them both.

Where can I find cheap test strips for One Touch? Mine (acctually is not for me is for my uncle) only came with 10 strips and 10 lancets. Thanks

You can buy from private sellers who get more than they need/use & then sell on places like auction sites.

You get very low prices but you're taking a big quality risk. How old/expired might they be? Did they take old expired strips & put in a vial with a newer date? How were they touched/handled? Temperature storage?

There are also many fake/counterfeits coming from Mexico, China, Turkey, Russia etc that are not or not always accurate.

On many products including many RXs, expireds are fine, but not on test strips.

Even an online site that is overall reliable can be selling soon to expire or strips stored in temperature extremes. YMWV.

My dd's came with a vial of 25 strips..and testing solution for the monitor..I didn't ask how many lancets it came with..but she loves the new penlett her machine was older and took more blood..she has been on insulin since she was 6 and is now 25 and now has to check her sugar about 6 times a day..so a new penlett was needed..and a new machine..hers was about 4 years old.

If you use the second link listed you don't have to go through that stuff. Just list that he has a older meter and it is NOT a One Touch. HTH

My Dad got two of these today. I don't know if it had something to do w/ the error messages i was getting originally or what but ... 10 extra test strips. I told my Dad he should try registering both and see if he gets the 20 strips per meter in the mail
