Uncrustables?

Has anyone tried making these at home and freezing theme? I have never bought them-so I was wondering how I would do this? My DD told me she wants to take lunch this year and I am looking for something easy for the mornings when I have worked the night shift. Thanks for any help.

I've never made these before, but pampered chef makes a tool(#1195 Cut-N-Seal® — $9.00 ) to make sandwiches like "uncrustables"

My DS had these EVERY DAY in his lunch last year. I always use the pampered chef cut and seal, put in a ziploc, and freeze. I'd do a week's worth at a time. There's a trick you need to know though. Put the peanut butter on both pieces of bread, then sandwich the jelly between the peanut butter. This way, the jelly doesn't soak through the bread.

I have used an empanada press to make them. I have a small one so I make 2 little ones (each with one piece of bread) and then they fit great in a snack size bag. There is a bit of waste, but the boys will sit there and snack on the crusts while I am making them.

I have cookie cutters from the dollar store that I have used for my kids and they think it's great. On the Pamapered chef one does it seal the edges of the bread? Do you think I could do this with my cookie cutters? My ds has had the crustables grilled cheese one years ago but I have not bought them in a very long time. They are so expensive, a box would be gone in two days with my kids. TIA

Yes, the Pampered Chef Cut n Seal gadget seals the edges.

Thanks, I was just thinking about asking this question. I am going to look at Pamperd Chef for the tool.. What do you freeze them in? Just zip lock or do you use the freezer vac?

Thanks for the OP!! A friend and I just purchased ones together (to save on shipping) and we both plan to make our own this year!! I'm going to also try making them with ham/turkey and cheese (since both can freeze and thaw alright).

I have the Pampered Chef tool, bought it thinking I could make these, but everytime I make them, the bread tears behind the seal. I did the pb on both sides thing too! But my bread always tears. What kind of bread are you using??!!!

Could you try using Sunbutter instead? It's made with sunflower seeds but tastes SO much like peanut butter! I worked in a preschool last year and we had kids that were allergic to peanut butter, so we used sunbutter instead and it was great! The kids loved it. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Great idea!! Thanks for posting OP! I never thought about making my own or that there was a tool out there to do it! I am going to check that out. In the meantime, I have been buying them for .90 per box at Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods (with coupons of course!). It is a decent deal, but there is not many in a box!

I use Nature's Own bread. Now that you mention it, I guess the bread does tear sometimes, but it's not a problem for us.
