Had gray dot items that I thought would be a dollar. At register they rang one penny. Many times these items are taken and not sold to me. Today, I said, I thought they were 1.00. Mgr did overide and sold them at 1.00.

Do not be surprised if gray dot tems are taken from you at check out.

I was pleased to get my items today.

Yes, you are correct. They aren't supposed to sell items that ring up for $0.01. They have to destroy them or donate them.

I had that happen to me, too...and it was an item I really wanted and the clerk snatched it out of my hands once she saw the register rang it up at $0.01.

Can they do that if the ring it up that shouldn't be able to just say that you and not let you buy an item that have out for sale

if they were going to donate or destroy it... why not just let you buy it for a penny? this makes no sense to me. i'd love love love to get a penny deal!

I came across some rock salt a couple of weeks ago for 90%, so the sign said, and it rang .01. Cashier and I were shooting the breeze and she didn't notice. I saw it on my receipt, thinking what a deal and came for more. I told the MOD about it and she said while she couldn't sell me more for .01, she gave me 4 more bags for .10 each - the lowest price on the sign. The rest went to the back. I was glad. I now have 8 20# bags of rock salt for next year and paid .44.

I have talked to Dollar General Corporate on numerous occasions now and four district managers and the policy is that you can purchase any penny item that you have in your cart at the time of purchase. Say you have ten pair of shorts that are a penny, you are allowed to buy those, but you can't go back and get more. Stores and even District Managers are entirely misinformed about this policy, but you can call and ask for yourself.

I would be seriously ticked off if I spent the time to shop somewhere (I'm slower than molasses in January and am a browser when I shop) and they took my purchases back from me instead of selling it. Corporate would be getting one nasty phone call from me. If they aren't going to sell it, the item should never hit the floor or should be removed before someone goes to purchase it. That's just a bad business practice.

I wonder why they even have an issue with selling an item for .01. If you are trying to get an item out of the door, get it out the door even if its for .01. I totally have a love/hate relationship with DG.

They probably get more money through tax write offs by donating them. I bought a plastic flowery decoration for my fils grave and I was willing to pay the $4 for it, but it rang up .01 and so it was a sweet little surprise.

I've looked for grey dot items in my DG, but have only found yellow and the occasional red.
