OK Everyone here we go! Every day we will read a chapter in Proverbs and come here to discuss, question and come to an understanding about each chapter in Proverbs. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs so we will do a chapter a day. We will start by reading chapter 1 today and come back tomorrow morning for the daily discussion. Each night I will post a link to the page where you can read the chapter that we are doing. Let's have fun with this and grow closer to the Lord while learning more about each other!

Here's the page for Proverbs Chapter 1. I love Bible Gateway because you can change the version of the Bible to what suits you best. I personally use the New International Version (NIV) and the Message most but feel free to use any version that you are comfortable with.

I admit that it has been a while for me too. But the Proverbs are suppose to be an easy read and a good way to get back into the Bible. Also with all of us on here we can help keep each other accountable.

Read again Proverbs 1 today, this is what really spoke to me:

33 "but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

I have lived a long time with this proverb, and it is really true. Believe, listen, learn, pray, protect yourself from other ideas, and you will be blessed.

Thanks so much for sharing! I once started Proverbs and never finished it. I am so looking forward to going through this all the way with all you wonderful members. I love hearing what everyone else gets out of the chapters.

Wow! What a great message to start our Bible study out with. I strongly recommend that if you are having trouble with understanding the translation of your Bible to go to the link I have towards the top of this thread and choose "The Message" translation. I had trouble understanding my Bible's translation in the NLT so I went to the site and choose :The Message" and it hit me like a brick! Please don't get frustrated if the first version you read you don't understand! Can't wait to begin the discussion tomorrow!

i printed it and we read it together after dinner and we all disscussed what we got from it, and well helped the kids with any questions they had... tysm...

So now that we have read Proverbs chapter 1, what did you all think? What do you think is the point of this Proverb is? How does this Proverb affect your life? Is there something from this chapter that really spoke to your heart?

Please share anything else that you picked out from this 1st chapter. I will be back in a littl e bit to share what my thoughts are!

do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
It seems so many people want instant gratification these days. They give in to temptation. Many take what others have worked for. I believe if you work hard, have faith in God, that all things are possible.

These verse also stood out to me. Very true

OH I hate this part, hated it in school too, where there is a "hidden" meaning in the text or it needs interpretation. I am so black and white in my thinking that I just don't "get most of it". But I'll try and Dawn, thanks for recommending "The Message" translation, that helped ALOT.

To me it says it all in verses 1-6 - this is the beginning of a manual for living life correctly and then passing that knowledge on. Learn from the older & wiser on following God and then teach that to the next generation, don't get sucked into the "easy way", the instant gratification.

I totally feel you about the reading comprehension part! You can totally skip over that if you want too. I'm never good at picking things either.

I agree with polydoly13... This is how life works best! We tend to naturally look for the easy way out of things, but the things we cling to when times get hard are usually those we have learned thru experience and through what others have taught us. (I know in my life if I try to fix things myself (taking the easy way) instead of trusting in the fact that God really does have the answer even when I don't see it...that is what brings chaos)

I use the NIV study bible that has commentary at the bottom of every page that explains things that may not be obvious. It also lets you know why something may have special significance that we may not know about( connection to old testament etc...) I love how much it helps me learn every time I read scripture.

v.5 says that the discerning will get guidance for understanding proverbs and parables... this will help us understand the other scripture we will read.

v.7 the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom ( my fav verse)

v.32 really struck me today.... the complacency of fools will destroy them WOW!!!

how many times do I sit idly by and (insert excuse here) for not seeking wisdom actively (scripture, prayer) and acting on what I've learned.
That's why I'm so glad Dawn got this group started!

I see this all too often. i guess I can take comfort that I'm not the only one ;-)
