Avocado Milkshakes

First thing to remember is that the Avocado is a fruit. They're referred to as "Alligator Pears" in many places and there are a number of uses for them other than the traditional Guacamole that people think of when they hear 'avocado', including Avocado Ice Cream.

Few tips on Avocados, they don't ripen until they fall off the tree or are picked. If you buy them and store them in your fridge they'll keep for much longer, if they're at room temp they'll ripen in a matter of a few short days. If you're lucky enough to have a tree and they're falling off, toss them in the fridge to keep them from ripening.

Also, depending on what you use in this recipe, it's very Low-Carb, so a good thing for those of you on Atkins or South Beach. Avocado is high in fat, but the good kind. Avocados are arguably the perfect food.

If blindfolded and given this with no idea what it was, you'd likely guess banana or pistaschio, possibly both.

Okay, so the recipe:

Avocado
Ice
Vanilla Extract
Sugar/Splenda
Milk/Cream/Ice Cream/Whipped Cream/etc

One avocado is enough for 2 glasses of smoothie/milkshake, if you're making a larger batch, use more avocado. The amount of ice/liquid is largely dependent on you, how thick or thin you want it.

Very rough idea, as I never measure:
1 avocado
2 cups of ice
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup sweetener
1 cup liquid

Then just add more of whichever you need, ice or liquid. I might be way off on the sugar, I don't use a measuring cup, so maybe it's more like 1/8 of a cup.

I'll be honest, a friend gave me the recipe about five years ago and I had no intention of making it, but then I had an avocado that needed to be used, a new Smoothie maker...and decided it couldn't hurt. I did make my kids taste it first. Now all three LOVE them, as do I. I've had various other people taste them and no one, not one person, hasn't liked them.

Give it a try.
