For those who dont know: I thought this would be a great idea to post for those that always shop at Target but do not want to have a Target CC (redcard or Target Visa) w/ interest. Or for those who have a Target Redcard already but don't always want to charge everything on it. There is a way to earn points by using whats called the Target Checkcard. It is the same thing as if you were to use your debit card except that every dollar you spend goes towards a 10% off shopping day. $1=1 point...1000points or $$=10% off day. You also get the Pharmacy rewards and you can also take advantage of the Take Charge of Education and 1% of your purchases goes towards a school of your choice. I know $1000 is a lot of money but hey if you are using your debit card anyways why not receive some points. You can apply at any Target and they just need a blank check or you can download the app and mail. Target Checkcard App to mail The main differences btw the Redcards and the Target check card is that you do not receive 10% for opening one and there is no interest. Target Card Comparisons Anyways just a way to get some benefits for the shopping you do there w/out any bills or interest. Last edited by shereen329; 06-07-2008 at 05:32 PM. |

I have had the check card for about 6 months now - I love it! it also helps me to keep from charging - instead of just putting something on my Visa, I use my checkcard so I earn points. I got my first 10% off day a couple of weeks ago. so if you're like me and shop a LOT but spend a LITTLE, it takes a long time to get the reward - but a bonus, nonetheless.

do they use your credit? and can you use it anywhere or just at target? do they charge every time you use it like a debit charge> cause that would stink!

I have had the Red Check Card for about a year now. It takes me about 6 mo or so to receive a 10% day. I would use my debit card anyway why not get point and send money to my kids school!!

do they check your credit rating? I assume so - I've never been able to get a debit card without my credit being checked. you can use it only at target. it does not carry the 'visa' logo like the credit card. there is no added charge when you make a purchase. the only downfall I've found is that it takes several days (usually 3-4) for the transaction to post to your bank account. my regular debit card posts transactions immediately when I run them through as 'debit'. also annoying when you return something, it takes a few days to get the money back in your acct. HTH someone! |

I dont think they use your credit b/c it does not show up as in inquiry on my credit report. And its only for Target If your bank charges you to use your debit card then I guess it would. It's exactly as if you were to use your own debit card except it takes a couple days to show. My bank does not charge me to use my debit card for purchases or to get cash back w/in a transaction so its a win win for me.

Okay, I give up. What does HTH mean??? Also, with the way some of us save money, it might take forever to reach a thousand bucks! When you have an OOP of under a buck for one transaction, it might be a while before you see a 10% discount, haha. I should still look into it, though. DH-to-be hates Walmart so we do most of our shopping at Target. Which is fine, cause we can save more money that way combining the Target and Manufactuer Qs! |

Whenever I return anything anymore, I just ask for a giftcard. I am generally going shopping right then anyways and that way I don't have to wait for them to process the credit back to my bank account. Plus I don't "lose" the points on what I have purchased and don't get any when I use the GC, but it works out the same in the end. |

Thanks for the great info! I have never heard of a Target Debit Card. As long as there are no bank fees - why wouldn't you? Here's another advantage vs. the Target card that no one else has mentioned. Ever get to the register with 2 full carts on your 10% off day, only to have them tell you your Red Card is over the limit and deny your card? It has happened to me twice and I was stuck -- do I put everything back, or just put it on my VISA or write a check, foregoing my discount and losing all those Target points? I pay my bill IN FULL every month and still go over my limit regularly... hate that when it happens on 10% off day. Have tried without success to get my credit limit raised - guess that's the last thing they want to do since they make no interest off of me and I REALLY take advantage of 10% off day to stock up on diapers, etc. usually spending over $300 on that day. The debit card is a great solution to my problem! |

One more thought - can I transfer extra points on my Red Card to my new check/debit card?

I agree w/A20somethingmother b/c when you receive your 10% off it is specific to the type of card. For example if you earned all your points on our Target Visa and you receive your 10% pass, it states right on there it is for the Target visa. If you try to use a diff card it will reject the payment and say that the specific tender does not apply when using the 10% pass.

I've had a Target Visa in the past, but I never knew about this. I prefer to use my debit card, so check card sounds like a great idea...even though it might take me two years to get enough for a bonus!

My Target VISA is now mainly a backup if my GM Family One Mastercard's address is not accepted. We have a different address system in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, than the Lower Peninsula, & other states. |
