Well don't have any great ideas on where to go, but one to help you save money once you decide on your destination.

..VRBO® is Vacation Rentals by Owner® Vacation Homes Rentals by Owner it is condo rentals by owners. We have rented from them for 6 years (different condos, different locations) and have never ever been disappointed or scammed.
These are the same buildings that rental companies often have condos located in, but are often cheaper due to the owner managing them instead of a company.

If you are making hotel reservations online thru any travel site or hotel site---before doing so - google search the hotel name and word code- for example
"Econolodge code" - we saved about $30 on our room doing this a few days ago.

What about Williamsburg, VA. there is your history, and VA Beach is only an hour or less from there.

myrtle beach is nice you can ride up to charelseton for a day but not until june 1,it s bikefest next week until memorail weekeend i all ready saw some of the bikes coming in for bikefest.we have a new hard rock park.

In between Myrtle Beach and Outer Banks is Wilmington, NC! Nice beaches at either Topsail (very family oriented, inexpensive), Wrightsville (more expensive, very nice beach) or Carolina Beach/Kure Beach (inexpensive, more Myrtle Beachy) and tons of history. Fort Fisher is at the tip of Kure Beach (last major battle before end of Civil War), downtown Wilmington is beautiful with big live oaks and tons of historic houses - three to tour Victorian, Civil War and Colonial, Orton Plantation (colonial rice plantantion), Brunswick Town (colonial town, some has been excavated), Battleship NC tours and I know I am missing things. Also film studio tours, aquarium, horse drawn trolley rides, etc. PM me if you want some links. HTH
