| Print Register Journal?
While the cashier was scanning multiples of the same coupon that gave overage today she kept getting a message that said "print register journal" and she'd push a button and a tiny slip of paper would print. She then asked me if I bought those items, which I had. She then manually entered the coupons and all was well. This same thing happened to me a few times in a row over the weekend, and then again today so I'm wondering does anyone know what that means or what triggers it?

If you look at most coupons in magazines, Sunday papers etc. now their are two scannable codes on them, if the wrong one scans it will bring up this message. It also comes up when the customer did not buy the right item, frequently when you are supposed to buy two and only get one, or sometimes for no apparent reason! Cashier should physically check the customer bought the item either by looking in bag or printing slip.

Well i noticed that it did this when i purchased the trial size charmin flushable wipes. I had a $1 off coupon and it kept doing that when the cashier scanned the coupon. then she said that it wouldn't accept the coupon so i told her that the coupon said on 'any charmin product' so she manually put it in. so i am always paying attetion to barcodes and i noticed the these wipes did not have a 37000 barcode like the coupon and all others proctor and gamble products it had a totally dfferent barcode so i really assumed this is why the computer kicked it out |

I think sometimes this happens because if you notice on the Q itself it states "limit one per purchase." If you have several Q of the same item them it my trigger the register, but I know the cashiers do not look that closely at the coupons so they will override if they verify you do have that many of the item.

Wal-Mart's coupon recognition program is SUPPOSE to go as such (I work in the corporate WM dept that helped fine tune this): Left check digit of 5: This indicates at the register that this is a coupon. We don't put coupons on file...read more to find out more on how it knows what to ring it up for... Next five digits: they are suppose to match the first five #'s of the upc of the product you purchased. The digits are actually OWED (they have to purchase them through a national company) by the supplier. I can personally tell you that P&G has more than 1 "upc sequence" just due to the multiple SKU's they carry. The last 3 digits (not including the right check digit) denotes to the register what the retail is suppose to be--I even have book that lists the number codes and $ amount that is recognized (use for work research). Take a peak at the coupons and you will see a pattern. The system is SUPPOSE to recognize if you purchased that particular vendor's item and how many c/o's vs. how many purchased. Does it always work like that? Not always..it's a computer system. LPIGRAM--you are probably correct as to why it doesn't recognize it on the wipes. FYI: if the cashier scans the wrong barcode on the coupon, it will not come up with a "register slip"--it never gets that far, it will say "invalid entry" when they try to scan the wrong barcode. All coupons that have a UPC need to include an additional bar code to be in compliance with the UCC coupon code guidelines from the GS1US (company that creates UPC's). It's used for vendor identification purposes. Clear a mud--there is a lot involved in those little barcodes
