Thumbs down Why does Target charge sales tax on total before coupons?

Why does Target charge sales tax on total before coupons but other stores do not? Is this legal and why do they do it and other stores do not... I could see if you had only FREE coupon items but when they are about 40 cents and 25 cents off, I don't get it.

I thought all stores did this, maybe it is just me. All the stores around here do, so who knows.

I believe this is standard procedure at stores. In fact, some promotions even spell out that tax is charged on the full value of the item. (I don't believe they can charge tax on the full value if they have reduced the price for a promotion.)

In my experience, all stores charge tax before the coupon is deducted. For example, on a free item coupon, you're still responsible for its taxes. My theory is that coupon or not, the state, county, and city are guaranteed to get their respective cuts first. In Chicago proper, said cut is 9%, and 10.25% later this year. Even with many, many coupons going unused each year, that would still be a lot of money for those entities to leave behind.

Well, I know at my CVS they only charge sales tax on the total after coupons. Today, for example, my total came to 6.60 I used my 6.00 CVS bucks and my total after that was .34 cents, not .60. So I was just wondering why stores differ on this. Thanks

My Targets charge sales tax on the price AFTER Target coupons but BEFORE manufacturer coupons.

I can tell you how it works in NC, not sure how it works in other states:

Sales tax is charged before mfr coupons but after store coupons.

Example:

You buy $1 bottle of shampoo.
You have a $1/1 store coupon
You pay NOTHING!

You buy $1 bottle of shampoo.
You have a $1/1 mfr coupon.
You pay TAX ONLY.

You buy $1 bottle of shampoo.
You have 0.50/1 mfr coupon AND a 0.50/1 store coupon.
You pay TAX ONLY ON 50 cents (the amt that was not covered by the store coupon)

Does that help?

I have the same problem around here...some stores charge tax before MQ, and some charge it after. I've quit trying to figure it out. Gonna have to pay it anyway.

Check your state law. I live in Oklahoma but frequently shop in Texas, and I know the two states have different coupons laws regarding tax. Before-coupon prices are taxed in Oklahoma whereas after-coupon prices are taxed in Texas.

It varies by state and has nothing really to do with Target! If you read the fine print on some of your FREE coupons, you'll see it says something about "tax due where applicable" or something. So, depending on where you live and the wonderful politicians who control the taxes and the laws applying to them, is whether or not you owe money on your pre or post coupon totals. HTH!
