Heads Up on using Staples Rewards!

I recently bought $60 worth of HP ink at Staples during their offer of triple recycling rewards wyb $50 in HP ink. However, upon looking at my account online, I didn't get my triple recycling reward. When I inquired about it, I was told that, because I used a Staples Rewards certificate to PAY for $50 of the ink, that I had not met the purchase requirement for tripling the recycling amount. Bottom line is...any rewards are earned only on OOP at Staples. If you use a previous reward (or any other coupon) to pay for your purchase, your purchase amount is reduced by the amount of the reward/coupon that you used.

Sure do wish I had known that!

Made the same mistake once. THat's why I like the rebate items better than Rewards items.

There has only been one FARewards item this school shopping season I think, a pack of highlighters. I have been hitting up the rebate items every week. I hope with my recycling, paper rewards and the highlighters I will have enough to put a dent in a laser printer. Or I will just wait and see if they do the battery deal this holiday season and use those for the printer. I am printing more coupons now and would really like a new printer.

Just last week there were a few Free-After-Rewards items. Pastel Colored paper ream and I can't remember the other one. I almost didn't catch it in the ad - I thought they were Rebate items.

Those items weren't in my ad. My area always has slightly different things and never all the deals.

As I understand it, you wouldn't get rewards for the for the printing paper if you used staple rewards (from cartridges) to buy it. You would get rewards for the amount you paid for the paper, LESS any coupons or staples rewards used in the transaction. Hope that makes sense.

What happened to me was that I had a $50 Staples rewards certificate, and used it to help purchase $62.00 worth of HP ink. I thought that the $50 purchase would qualify me for triple recycling rewards (which would have been $6/cartridge, limit 5, so $30 total). But, since I used the $50 rewards certificate in the transaction, that reduced the amount that "counted" toward the deal to only $12. It ended up "costing" me an extra $20 for the ink, since I didn't get the recycling triple I was counting on.

I'll do it differently next time I try to get the HP ink deal.

The ink is a little tricky, but you can use the rewards to buy the easy rebate items which they can send you a check. That's usually my roll:

HP Ink
drop off ink recycling
pay cash

buy easy rebate items
pay with rewards from ink & recycling

wait for checks from easy rebate items and go buy ink again...when it's double or triple reward for recycling

Sometimes there are no easy rebates and if that's the case I try to find a gift for my hubby or DD.

Also, I collect ink cartridges where ever I can. Sometimes it's hard to come up with 5 or 10 cartridges to recycle to get the maximum benefit. I've found some new ones on clearance for $2 and bought them knowing that eventually I'd get $4 (or even $6 now) out of them. I used WAGS RR to buy them so it worked out. Think of relatives that don't coupon but have printers that don't mind donating to your cause ...plus its good for the environment!

cal618 - that is really helpful!

I knew I needed to do something different, but couldn't figure out what to do to avoid so much OOP on the ink.

Great idea on adding to my "used cartridges" collection - I'll be on the lookout for these at Goodwill, etc. I have been passing up the ones that don't fit, but hadn't thought of using them for recycling.

This week they are offering the copier paper (limit 2) for $.01 after Easy Rebate so yes, this week you can. You would pay $4.99 with your Staples Rewards and then submit for your Easy Rebate and then they will send you a check for $4.98 (x2 if you buy both).
