I've got 2 lil ones teeting so this was a must. My son
H-A-T-E-s anbesol and gets ready for war when he sees it comming. So my daughter was the guinea pig and she had NO reaction but passed out about 15 mins later. Of course being the curious mommy I put some on my tongue..NOTHING..lMBO..so I tried more this time still nothing so I tried it on my sone HE passed out 15 mins later. So I read the tube again in more detail and LOL when I got to the part about them falling asleep. Sooo I'm not sure how it relieves the pain because I didn't feel anything ..but this is my new best frien ;0)

I usually use this gel or tablets and so far had good luck with it. Not so much with the falling alseep, but then again the younger one loves to fight her sleep.
I thought it would be wiped out here, but the two of the three closest stores to me had PLENTY! Thank goodness, and they were on a peg hanging instead of next to the other teething gels, in case it's like that in other areas and people may overlook it.

I thought that about the first 2 I went to and got upset..but at the last store I tought this can't be right and looked more closely..they weren't on a shelf with the other teeting items but on a hangie thingie with the bottles and other misc stuff.I even asked the ppl that worked a the stores and they had no idea what I was talking about ...sooo I went back to the first 2 and sure enough they were in odd places...I would suggest searching the walgreens site to see if they r in fact at those stores

Just my experience

When my daughter was teething, we bought some of these and showed them to her pediatrician, who did some research on the ingredients and promptly told us to throw them away. Because they are herbal, it is not controlled as much, so you might want to be a little careful and do a little research before you give it to your kids.

All hylands products are homeopathic which are herbal. Here is a tidbit from a website I found
Quote:
Homeopathy is a method of treatment that supports the body's own healing mechanism. It 's based on the law of similars "like cures like". A homeopathic remedy is an extremely pure, natural substance that has been diluted many times. In large quantities these subtances would cause the same symptoms the patient is trying to cure. In small, pure, diluted doses, it is not only safe and free from side effects, but it will trigger the body to heal itself. Example: Allium cepa is a remedy that is used for watery eyes and runny nose, it is created from red onion. If you've cut open a red onion you'll notice the same symptoms. When the body creates a similar "symptom picture" to Allium cepa and you take a dose of Allium cepa, it activates the body to go about the process of stopping watery eyes and a runny nose.
They are also God's gift to parents with infants! I don't know how I would have gotten through teething with my DS without the tablets. We also use Hylands ear ache drops because he had bad infections for a long time.
The teething tablets and gels are something that I ALWAYS recommend to my momma friends . For me I feel more at ease giving my son something that is natural rather than gels made of chemicals.

Ditto this - exact same ingredients as the tablets that were recalled. There is no FDA regulation on herbal/homeopathic/natural supplements, so there could be much more or much less amounts of the active ingredients than are listed on the packaging. This was why the tablets were recalled - inconsistency in the amount of ingredients from product to product. It's a use-at-your-own-discretion thing; make sure you do your research before deciding to give to your children.

(FWIW, I'm a certified pediatric RN and we don't use these products at home)

Wasn't Orajel recalled recently as well?

I wanted to give this stuff a shot but I will have to pass. We were never big on using this kind of product for teething and mostly stuck with cool (temperature cool ) toys or wash clothes.

I did use the Orajel qtip looking kind when it was bothering them at night and preventing them from sleeping.

I will use a herbal homeopathic product WAAAAYYYYYY before I will give my kids a man made chemical based product. We used these products with all 4 of our girls and my pediatrician is the one that told me to get them. Not everyone in the medical field thinks they are bad

My two cents for what it's worth...

1.) Having had two crabby babies (MSPI), there was little that I wouldn't try to make them happy. Including old wives tales, homeopathic, prescription, etc.
2.) My ped said that the teething gel usually washes off so quickly (because of all the slobber) that I has little effect. Don't know if this is true or not.
3.) Really, to each their own!

Just as I was reading through the earlier post , I thought oh god , they need to know the health risk !! .. Thank you ped RN .. Being a nurse also I know that using this stuff can be very very harmful !! The pros are no where near worth the cons of using a product like this .. Please use caution in using any medicine whether over the counter or not that causes children to become sleepy ( ESP on the little guys )

Btw .. The gel might come off there gums as they slobber .. But let's think about where it goes .. Now, is all of it coming out of there mouth with the drool ? .. ( No ) .. It gets swallowed , ending up in the stomach and also is absorbed through there mucus glands , taste buds , and tonsils .. By that point , it gets absorbed by the entire body .. In the bloodstream and tissue .. Ingredients are not regulated .. Meaning the next tube sitting on the shelf could be a 10th of OR 10X more a part per billion of the one sitting next to it .. Never the same.. So you can end up with products that have way more of a active ingredient then what is suppose to be in it.. In a product like this it's a kid getting sleepy , parents get relieved also .. I think they end up more relieved by the kid calming down and taking a nap than the child .. Lol .. But it's a false Yea , if u know how bad it could be .. Besides they usually wake up with a toothache still :-( .. A lot of children suffer from apnea .. Including My youngest daughter .. She also suffered from severe acid reflux .. She was was not diagnosed right away .. The dr originally said all kids spit up .. Some a lot .. I knew better .. After they did a test in the hospital they came back and told us she would have Been a SIDS baby .. While they were testing she had 39 apnea episodes ( she stopped breathing 39 times) the reflux was so constant and painful it was just enough at the time to get her to go to take a breath to cry .. We had taking her at least 15 times to the dr before she was 2 months old before that test was done .. Did the special formula . Yada yada ..medicine , everything .. I pushed and pushed .. And thank god it was diagnosed in time .. She was only taking off oxygen and the apnea monitor at night when she turned 3 years old .. Imagine another child like mine ..she is now 5 .. How many SIDS cases could be undiagnosed apnea ..??? At least we know a child has never died or had major complications from just having a toothache NOT treated .. With so many what IFs , it just seems no where near worth it ...

Generic acetaminophen is still available. Only the name brand Tylenol products were recalled.
