Question about Pure Protein

I made a Wags run at lunch hoping to score some of the Pure Protein bars that are on sale for $0.99. I also had a $1.00 IP.

Do you see the trouble that's brewing?

I know the Wags coupon policy pretty well, and thought this part:
Quote:
"In the event that any item's selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item. Coupon redemption can never exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons."
means that they would either adjust the item or the coupon.

Well, neither the cashier nor the AM had any idea what I was talking about, and had no idea how to do what I was trying to do.

My questions:

1) Am I reading this part of the coupon policy incorrectly? Do stores have any obligation to adjust things?

2) I didn't think about this until just now, but what if I had other items in my transaction to absorb that $0.01 overage? Would that work?

with your IP and their selling price, they should be able to adjust the face value to .99 (although they will get full $1 when submitted to clearing house UNLESS they mark (or cancel) the barcode and write .99 on the coupon).

did cashier reject your IP? if they took your IP for .99 and you just paid tax (if any), they were correct.

as to question #1, I don't know of the legality regarding stores adjusting coupon values to match their sale price with them keeping the overage. There are other stores doing this that I know of. Either customers continue to use their coupons there or they go to WM and get the excess amount from their coupons.

as to your question #2 on the .01 being absorbed in case you're buying other items, it can ONLY be absorbed if you're buying another "like" item. Let's say you have 1 IP and buying 2 of the same item, I'm pretty sure, your IP will go through without a beep. BUT, if you're using the overage to cover for other items that is not from the same mfr, the register will reject your IP with msg that amount has exceeded sale price. That is when cashier has to do the necessary adjustment. I learned this with a $3 Schick razor sold by WAG and I had $4 any Schick razor MQs. The SM said I can buy 4 razors, use 3 MQs so there'll be no adjustment and I still get them all free. 4 razors = $12, my total coupon value was $12 which means the overage on the 2 MQs were applied to the other razors I bought.

HTH.

Nothing happened, actually - they refused to do anything and seemed confused/insulted as to why I'd suggest a modification (to either the item price or the coupon amount). They basically told me, "Sorry, we won't take your coupon. It's MORE than the price." So I put them back. I was honestly confused as to why they couldn't price adjust the bars to $1 when I had just finished having them price adjust my Almay because of the BB Q not working.

Thanks for the reminder about the legality of it all - I know Target has been in trouble for doing exactly that, pocketing the overage.

I just want my free protein bars, dangit!

I'll try a different store tomorrow.

Walgreens actually has 2 areas in their own Coupon policy that speaks about coupons that are more than the sale price.. The only you pointed out:

Sale Items
Walgreens will accept manufacturer coupons for an item that is on sale.
In the event that any item's selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item. Coupon redemption can never exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons.

And then right after that they go on talk about their policy w/mult coupons:

Multiple Coupons
When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.
The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).
When purchasing multiple items, Walgreens accepts multiple identical coupons for multiple qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers, unless a limit is specified. Management reserves the right to limit the quantity of items purchased.

While they should have laid their policy out better by having a separate section addressing coupons worh more than the sale price and then specifics of sale pricing and coupons and mult coupons.. They do have an area within their own policy that says they can/should/will reduce the value of the coupon.

It seems that if they can reduce it when you have a store coupon AND a manu coupon, then they obviously CAN do it..

I started to run into this with the Reach coupons too.. I told her I know it's in the policy that they can reduce the coupon or increase the price - she got her mgr, he simply coulnt's remember so he went to the front of the store to look at their policy and then told her how to do it.. no biggie then...

I too have had this happen this week with the same coupon/product. I was rejected and told that I can not use a coupon that is more then the sale price. I pointed out the policy and was told that I could not use the coupon. Last night at the same store my husband was not able to use two coupons on the air freshner bogo deal and was told that he would be basically getting the products for free and that wasn't allowed. The manager on duty was very rude to him. I call customer service and am waiting for a call back. I am very disappointed in my local Walgreens lately.

Yuck, I'm sorry you had the same experience.

I honestly don't understand why they can't price modify up $0.01, especially when they were price modifying down left and right for the Almay.

I'm trying a different store at lunch, hopefully I'll have something good to report!
