Can overage be used to purchase a gift card? I totally understand that overage is a YMMV situation, but there are times when I get overage with coupons and end up buying stuff that I don't really want or need to be able to use my coupons. I would much rather have a gift card if that's possible.

I wouldn't see why not- you can get a gift card @ Target for any amount. Great thinking!

Depends on your cashier. I've done it before at Walmart & Rite-Aid.

I could see it happening.

I imagine if you add it before the cashier puts in the coupons it will be no problem. I have not tried it, but that is a good idea.

I have done it with no problem at Target twice. I just started this when I don't need anything else. Also, remember that SC Johnson had that coupon in Real Simple this month where you buy 5 of their items (no minimum dollar amount to be spent) and you get a Target Gift Card for $5. You just need the coupon from the Real Simple magazine. If you are worried about getting a gift card and being looked at funny, this is one way to use your overage and get money back (and you can get the 97 cents Glade sprays, so you aren't really out money because the overage pays the Glade product, and you get $5 in a Target Gift Card). Have done this, too, and no problems. |

Oh, and I always have them ring the gift card first, then my products. I usually get the gift card for $10. I might have to pay a little OOP, but I don't mind.

Thanks, y'all. I figured it was probably doable, but really had no idea. It seems like everything with coupons is YMMV because it depends so heavily on the cashier, but I figured it was worth asking. I'd much rather have a gift card than have to figure out what to buy when I really don't need anything.

I would just be very careful when you do this, since in general couponers want to fly under the radar. I spoke with one of my supervisors regarding coupons one day and they mentioned this and to them, it's a big no-no, and I have a very coupon friendly Target. I can see where they're coming from, but if you are allowed to do it, I would maybe limit how often, since you don't necessarily want to draw attention to yourself.

That makes sense. It's not very often that I get overage. I can usually get items for very cheap or free, but overage is extremely rare for me, so even if they did allow it, it wouldn't happen very often.

At my Target, the cashiers are super friendly. I honestly don't think they'd even notice anything unusual about a transaction like you're describing.

| I agree--the cashiers at my store wouldn't notice anything unusual either, but my supervisors did, which is the bigger issue I think. If the managers see something suspicious, that's going to create more problems in the end than the cashiers seeing it as unusual. So that's the only reason I said I'd be careful. Until I heard that my managers saw this as a violation, I didn't think twice about it either.

I've bought a $10 gift card at Wal Mart a few times with my overage from the Adams flea collar coupons wherein each time I would use them, I would have $2 overage per coupon...either that or it will subtract it from my grocery bill...
