Oh man ~ now DH keeps telling me 13 is the magic age boys start needing these! So do I start stockpiling?!? I certainly want to make sure he (and she) are safe IF something like this does go on ~ but I certainly don't want to ENCOURAGE this type of thing either ~ oh boy!!!

13? Oooohhhh my son is 11 now . . . . . . I hope it is more like 15 or 16.

If I find out or my DH finds out that our son is needing these before he is 18, he will loose out on alot of $. My dh set up a fund for the kids to get $1,000 each year that they stay out of "trouble" including sex, drugs, drinking, etc.

Once they are out of HS, they can use this $ to buy a car or help with schooling funds. It is up to them.

I sure hope it works, because kids are not ready to have sex while they are in Junior High or High school.

I don't think I would have traded the promise of $ for some of the fun I had when I was a teenager. Do your kids know about this deal? And how do you plan on making sure they live up to their end?

They do know about the fund. It started when they were 10. I told DH that we have good kids and wait until 13 at least.

Drugs, smoking and drinking we will have a good hand on, but the sex part is the one we will have no control over. I am hoping that my children have enough sense to wait and enough courage to talk to me about sex and other things.

I am not worried about my daughter who is now 13. My son who is 11, is a different story, but is still a good kid overall. He doesn't believe that kids shouldn't be "dating" in middle school. He thinks that girls are ok, but they are not cute.

OK ~ pretty sure 13 was that "start" age so the parent's of the 11 yr olds can take a breathe.

We put away $1,000 per kid, per year in an educational IRA ~ we won't give an 18 yr old the choice of a car or an education (our country doesn't feel that they are old enough and mature enough to vote or drink a beer!)

Personally I think the whole "deal" thing might be just more of a challenge to not get caught!

On a side not ~ if DS or DD ends up out, at a party or in a bad situation, I want them to call me for a ride home ~ not stay where they aren't comfortable or get a ride they are unsure of. I don't want them NOT calling me because they don't want to loose their $1,000 or whatever.

My 11 yr came and asked me what a condom was because the boys saw one on the road getting on the bus. They were talking about it and he didn't know what it was so he came and asked me. He knew I would want to know WHY he was asking, but he also knew I would give him an honest answer.

Call me idealistic ~ but I do believe many of the world's problems can be solved by education. I want my kids to come to me! I want to know who their friends are and what they are like.

My parents only rule about cigarette & alcohol were "if you are going to do it ~ sit here with us and do it" ~ it took all the fun out of it!

Now my Dad's rules of sex were a little different "no sex on the first date ~ never go out with the same guy twice" course he also told me I couldn't date till I was married ~ which really isn't going over well with DH!
