Can't use $1 off Tide on trial sizes

Last week, I went to my local Target. I got 5 trial size Tides for $0.97 and had 5 $1 off ANY size Tide. The cashier let me use 4 because otherwise she'd have to give me cash back. I wasn't trying to get cash back. I know I had read on here that they price adjust the coupon, but there were people behind me and I was in a hurry so I didn't say anything. All the coupons scanned fine except for the last one.

I went back today to get 5 more and another item. The cashier wouldn't let me use any of the coupons. The register wouldn't take ANY of the coupons because the amount was over. I told her what happened last week and she called a manager over. The manager told me it had to be a full sized bottle. I pointed out where it said ANY size. She said no, because the price was less than the coupon. I told her I did it last time with no problem and she told me that cashier never should have put them through. I told her that corporate says I can use them and she said she's been there for 15 years and has never heard of that. I said fine, forget all of it and left.

I called corporate when I got home. She said that yes, I could have used it, they should have adjusted it, but may have only let me use one per purchase. She said she would call the store and inform them of the coupon policy. However, how am I supposed to know who she talked to or what was said?

I called another Target in the area where I work and that CSR said absolutely not. AND said that she didn't know who I talked to at corporate, but that's not their policy!!

So now what am I supposed to do with the coupons??

Oh, and Walmart wouldn't let me do it either. Those cashiers were doing the pointing and whispering thing when they went to ask.

What you should do is first get the coupon policy and print it! I would link you but i am not at a computer. The cashier can adjust the coupon. Most have no idea how to do that, that is why they freak and have such a problem. I just again had mine adjusted yesterday, again i forgot how they did it so i can tell the next cashier. Just have them call the manager. They are suppose to adjust so no overage is made, that was your problem. You needed something to cover the overage. The problem i am hearing is that you cant use more then 1 exact coupon per transaction. This does not stand true for MQ but can for TQ as it says it on the coupon specifically. MQ too can say 1 per transaction but that is rare. Im sorry you have to deal with incompetant people. So aggravating!!!

I did talk to a manager. She said she's been there for 15 years and never heard of them adjusting a coupon.

The only coupon policy I could find is the one listed here in the Target 101 section. I doubt they would accept it since it says Huntville store (I'm in Indiana) and it's not from their site (like has the site listed on it).

If you email target about your experience they will email the policy to you. They will also tell you next time you are in the store that you can call them and they will walk the cashier through it.

as to the policy, I suggest you email Target so they will reply back with your name in the email. nothing can get more personal than that and they know you contacted corporate and was given that policy, kwim?

BUT, don't rely on that email. IME with Target, it doesn't always work showing that email. if you encounter a power tripping SM, just forget it and try another day. You're just wasting time trying to explain to them and they will not budge if they have set their mind on something. I just choose my cashiers carefully. But I'd rather buy them at WM if available since I get overage at WM but not at Target.

I just buy these Tide at SWM, I'm glad they carry it now. Previously, they had the powder sachets, now all they carry is the liquid detergent trial size. If you have WM, try it there and I hope you have better luck.

I tried at Walmart too, nope. I called their corporate and someone is going to call me back in "5-7 days".

I asked Target corporate for their coupon policy and she said she'd snail mail me one. I'll definitely be going back in a few days and have corporate's number AND my reference number just in case.

I had trouble at Walmart, but my cashier at Target put them right through, no problem. She just marked them down by .03 to cover the difference since they don't give overage.

I feel lucky that all of my coupon experiences at our local Target have been pleasant and positive. I even made a point of talking to the manager one day when she came over to help w/ something. I praised their employees and their awesome handling of coupon transactions and told her that I was changing my shopping over to their store b/c of this. I made sure she knew I was shopping for a family of six too! ;-)

all the cashier has to is hit the button for manufacturers coupons, and then key in the price of the coupon. It very simple, the problem is that they are trained like robots and follow all prompts and don't know what to do when something goes wrong.

The trail size at my ST is priced at 1.04 (I think). The coupon still beeps and has to be pushed through.

This always happens at Target. Just accept it like death and taxes, and coupon issues at Target.

Here's what you do. The cashier must press the K4 key followed by the K2 key, and key in the amount of the coupon. Most cashiers will insist on punching in the amount of the product and not the coupon--which isn't technically legal--but whatever as you just really want the free item. Most don't know how to do it, so they automatically assume that there is something wrong with the coupon. However, the coupon specifically states ANY ONE TIDE and the manufacturer has no idea how much the item is being sold for. They just want you to save 1.00 on ANY TIDE. So if you were paying 50 dollars a bottle or 5 cents a bottle, you should still get your dollar off. Also all stores always get reimbursed for the entire amount on the coupon plus .08 cents handling.

I hate Target sometimes. Most of the time actually. UGH!!!

I too went to buy 7 packs of tide with my last 7 q's. The girl looked at the coupon and read it, she scanned it and it went throught with no beeps. The she called over another girl and showed her and she said I couldn't use it because it was more than the price of the item. I told her your policy is to adjust it and she said there is no way of doing that so I told her to take them off then. The stupid thing is she let me use the rest which was for $1 off the .$97 shout wipes and I had a listerine peelie for $1 and the trial size was also $.97. These ones beeped and she pushed them through. At least I got 6 rolls of bounty and 6 rolls of charmin to go plus the $3 in overage. I'm still gonna use the tide q's. It just depends on your cashier. Some care and some don't. Try again poloponyrider since these expire on the 31st. Go for the younger male cashiers. They seem to push all the q's through.

Target tend to say that a lot. You CAN use a coupon on travel size if it doesn't exclude it. It is very simple to adjust the Q but some cashiers (even managers) do not know how to do so - strange but true. I hear that a lot and many times I won't even argue and just say forget it... Take it off my transaction! I really hate dealing with some cashiers.

I agree with ckfreebie81...everytime i go to target and get a female cashier i have problems. So going to a young male cashier was suggested to me on here and I took the advice and 2 times now they run my stuff through no questions asked. Went yesterday to get more schick razors and use my $2/1 reach q's(which were denied by a female) and the male ran them right through and told me "wow you had it all set up right today huh?" with a big smile, as i was getting 2 schick titanium razors and a reach toothbrush for 71¢ oop. I was going to use my tide q's there but they are out of the trial size, but last time a female questioned mine i tld her it says off "any" and she ran them through.

This is the very reason I won't go to Target unless its a great deal! I called corp! They told me that it was up to the individual store they could adjust or not accept it! What the heck they need to have a policy & stick with it. So I took my $1/1 Band-aid Qs that I was trying to get from trail size that said could use on any size! I asked them to adjust you would of thought I had committed murder won't go to Target lost my business I'll go someplace where they are coupon friendly, but that is getting harder & harder to find!

I would recommend having a printout of the store coupon policy with you. I have had issues and I have pulled it out. That way you are already informed about it and it is there and at that point I would show them where on the coupon policy how they adjust the coupon to make the item free. And if they still have an issue then I would say to them that you will contact corporate about this issue of them not being informed about their store policy. And at that point I would be sure to write down on the receipt who was there. The cashier and or CSM and the store#, register #, etc etc. Hope this helps.

When my Tide coupons beep and the cashier doesn't know what to do I just tell them that other cashiers have adjusted it down to $0.97. They usually agree.

Here is the email target guest relations sent me. It is the same for everyone I printed it out and if I ever have a cashier that gives me hassle I show them this. If they wont budge ask for the manager and if they tell you no (which some do) you can call the # provided and they will tell them what the letter states. HTH

Also, if you have any questions about a specific coupon or experience using a coupon at Target, we want to help! Please give our Guest Relations team a call at (800) 440-0680. We'll do the best we can to help you as quickly as possible. For your call, please provide a team member with the following reference number: 1-375427330.

In the meantime, I'd like to share with you some information about our coupon policy. When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:

- We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued and manufacturer-issued.
- We'll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
- We can't give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item; in this case, we're able to adjust the value of the coupon to equal the price of the item.
- We can't accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
- All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you're checking out.

Thanks for writing. Give us a call if there's anything else we can do to help.

Sincerely,

Daniel

Ok, so here's what happened yesterday. I had printed out one of the Target coupon policies from this site and had a post-it with the K keys they're supposed to push.

Target store 1 - (The one I called before and CS said corporate was wrong.) Got 10 Tides and a small tote ($1.99). Cashier wouldn't take the coupons. I expected a problem, so made sure I was nice and sweet (not that I'm normally mean, but you know what I'm saying!) and asked for a manager because I had this problem before and corporate said I could use them. Manager comes, with an attitude right away after she looked at the coupons. I said that I had already called corporate and they said I could use them, the coupon had to be adjusted. She said... "This guest is being RUDE, I'm going to take her to customer service." !!! With other customers in line behind me! I assure you I was. not. being. rude.

She gets to the desk and can't find the 800 number. I had it on my print out, but figured I'd let her look for it. She finally figures out what she's doing, calls, explains the situation, then says "Oh. Ok, fine." And hands me the phone. He's very nice, apologizes, says it's no problem. She hangs up and is pounding on the keyboard changing the coupons to $0.97. She gives me the total, I had her the money and say "I wasn't trying to be rude, I just wanted to use my coupons." She says, "Here's your change, have a nice day MA'AM." I couldn't help it, I said "Thank you for calling and finding out you were wrong, I hope you have a wonderful day too." Ugh!!!

Target 2 - The one I originally posted about. I found the youngest, newest cashier I could find. She was nice, and said she didn't think I could use them. I had my paper ready and said I had that problem before and this is what corporate said they had to do and told her the K4 then K2. She said "OH! Ok, no problem!" However, I had just the Tide (10 at $0.97) so when it got down to the last two coupons, it wouldn't let her do it because the total before tax was $0.70. So I used 8 coupons on 10 Tides and paid just over $1.

Walmart - Another nice cashier. She tried different ways and register wouldn't let it go through. She called someone else over who said someone tried this last week and they were told no. I told her it was probably me, I had called corporate and got a call back from the store manager who said to come in and try it again because it should work. Luckily she was there and came up. Very nice woman, but I could tell she wasn't going to push it through. She said it could risk their contract with Proctor & Gamble if they push it through because then the totals won't match and it'd be coupon fraud. I know from what I've read on here that that isn't the case, but was not going to argue. Like I said, she was very nice and was the asst store manager. She suggested I call PG and see what they say and give her a call back and let her know. So I just might.

And I just may call Target corp back and complain about that manager at store 1.

This coupon has caused quite the stir. I actually talked to someone at P&G because I had the same problem at Walmart. The official word is that a retailer can refuse a coupon based on their corporate policy. But, according to P&G those coupons are redeemable on ANY Tide detergent including the trial size. They do not care what size detergent we buy, they reimburse the retailer the full face value of the coupon no matter the size. I take this to mean that if a store has a written policy stating that coupons which are a larger dollar amount than an item are not accepted, than they can refuse it. If they don't have that particular policy then they must just like to lose business! BTW, when I talked to P&G they asked for my Walmart's info so they could contact them and let them know that they actually did mean ANY Tide detergent. If you'd like to contact P&G the number I called is 513-983-1100. I asked the operator to transfer me to someone about a problem using one of their coupons. At any rate, good luck!

this is the same as my experience and its with PG coupons also. I called them years ago that some stores refuse to take their coupons and I was told stores had the right to refuse ANY coupon. I just have to find a store that will take them.

that was the time I realized, couponing is NOT a right. Stores have the prerogative to take them or refuse them. its best to know where we stand so we don't get so riled up on certain issues.

I feel ya on the Target thing. I went today, going to use the $1/1 Tide coupons for the 1 Load Trial Size. Cashier wouldn't let me. Claimed it was not good on the trial size. So she proceeds to read the coupon aloud, yet NOTHING she read said otherwise.

I didn't really need the Tide, so I said "Ok, just take the Tide off then."

Besides, that cashier always gets irritated with me when I go through her line. Older lady, not so happy to work there. If I get the younger cashiers, they usually know what they're doing and push them through. Maybe I'll try again with another cashier another day this week.

I also had the $1 off IP for Softsoap and she looks at it and says "You didn't have any of those." I tell her "It says on ANY Softsoap, except the elements."
I mean, really, are you just going to LOOK at the pictures, lady?????
(I had bought 2 Ensembles refills and paired them with the Target Q's).

Needless to say, I was slightly fuming when I left the store.
