Update: Dove/homemade laundry soap

I was questioning using the dove bar soap in place of the Fels soap in the homemade laundry soap recipe and it works well

I used:

1 bar dove
1 cup borax
1 cup arm and hammer washing soda

Smells good coming out of the washer too and did a fine job cleaning the cloth diapers (which is what i was worried about the most anyhow). From time to time i put vinegar in the rinse cycle (scented with orange EO)

That's AWESOME! How much do you use per load??? I can't wait to try this ... just need to get motivated! ;-)

. . . you use the vinegar as a fabric softener - right???

yes, the vinegar acts like a fabric softener and deodorizer and germie killer.

I use 1 - 2 tbsp per load of the laundry mix

I would love to make my own but I am worried. I have a front loader and I am afraid that it will clog the chambers if I don't get it mixed well enough. Does anyone make their own and have front loaders?

I bought a bunch of the dove bars just for this reason in case things get bad.

Schmidt, lots of people use homemade detergent for front load. It's low sudsy. Google it for lots of recipes.

Thanks so much for the info!! I am always worried about how clean the cloth diapers will get, but I usually line dry them anyway so the sun can "bleach" them. Good to know this will work well, and I LOVE the smell of dove so that' a bonus!

Need to get some more now!

what a great idea! I too have a front loader and am worried about the suds. We just bought it and we were reminded like 5 times from the sales person and another 3 from the installers that if we don't use HE detergent it voids the warranty!

I'll have to google it and see if I can do it or not.

I have never used homeade laundry detergent. Does it make the laundry feel sticky or anything? I am really interested as i have a lifetime supply of dove bar soap.

I have made my own laundry soap for about a year now and either use ivory soap or dove depending on what I have as my children are allergic to alot of smells and highly perfumed detergent.
it cleans well, low suds, and smells fantastic when comes out of the washing machine.
I make my own fabric softener with hair conditioner as well.

I am going to try this with the dove bars that I got. I have been saving the bottles from my detergent just for this reason. My local frugal group speaks raves about it.

What is the rest of the recipe? How much water? thanks so much.

We have a well and septic tank and our plumber said to use vinegar in the rinse water several times a week, at least , and the vinegar will clean the lines of the washer and gets soap residue out of the clothing. The plus it doesnt turn thick in the septic line. Havent seen him again since starting this plan, except at the grocery store!

This is how I make mine
6 cups water
3 cups white vinegar
2 cups hair conditioner (ones that I get free )
(you can also add up to 10 drops of essential oils for fragrance)

I use an old downy fabric softener bottle to put mine in and an old 1/2 gallon milk jug I mix it all together in a bowl then funnel it into the downy container first till it is full then I put the remainder in the 1/2 gallon milk jug becuase I also make my own dryer fabric sheets

take 4x6 flannel strips and edge stitch them so they dont fray. take an old diaper wipe container and put your flannel strips one on top of another in there then pour your liquid fabric softner that you just made on top allow to set up 24 hours. flip them from bottom to top every time you use them. squeeze out excess liquid and put into dryer.
after it is used place in a washer mesh bag they cannot be reused until they are washed because they wont absorb the liquid enough.
I made 20 sheets so they last a while

Laundry Soap

I dont make the liquid either. I Grated mine, then put it through the food processor to get it really fine. I mixed it all together before i processed it. I used:

1/3 bar Fells naptha
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1 cup Borax

I made an extra large batch, so i wouldn't have to mess with it again for awhile. I have enough for 600 loads. (actually made enough for 1200 loads and split it with a friend)I use 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons per load. My hubby was amazed at how clean his work clothes where the very first time he used it. It also continues to get out the residue from commercial laundry soap after more washes. If you like your soap to produce suds, THIS WON'T!!
I've read where this is great for sensitive skin. I made this right BEFORE i started usiong coupons. Next time, I'll try it with dove or whatever i can get for free.

For stains, I just wet the item. Then rub alittle dry soap on the stain. It works great on my sons dirty clothes. It also helps to pre-soak the load for really dirty clothes.

WE LOVE IT!!! We'll never go back to commercial soaps!!

don't forget for anyone that wants to try this... 3pks of Ivory soap are on sale at Wags this week for $.99. Good filler item. I bought 2 packs yesterday. Also can use johnson buddy bars. That's what I have been using lately.

Alexdur85... DH is a garbag man and I do not really like to use the homemade soap for HIS stuff. It's just too gross and smelly. But I LOVE it otherwise. Perfect for all my stuff and son's stuff.

I can't speak directly to the homemade laundry soap, but where I live the water is really, really hard and I always have to use more soap than is recommended for any given load. (Plus borax and vinegar in the wash cycle, and vinegar in the rinse cycle) If your water is bad like mine it could be that you need to use more soap or adjust the soap recipe (I've seen a lot of recipes online that say you'll need to tweak the recipe for your situation).

Question. You know those little pieces left in your bathroom. Anybody use these. I always throw them away, but think this is wasteful... Could you save them and when hard grind them? I thought I heard once somebody had made liquid hand soap with these? Any suggestions.

I've heard the liquid soap idea, but never tried to grind them. Don't see why it wouldn't work though? The recipe I use for (powdered) soap says 1cup of finely grated, so as long as you had enough soap scraps to make a cup it would probably work. Might be a little stinky if you tried to mix different soaps with different smells.
