| Vacationing in OBX - FL or HT???
I will be in Duck for 10 days and have found out that there is a Harris Teeter and a Food Lion in a neigboring town. Having never been to either, where is the best place to shop (and why). I know everyone is busy, but if you can give me any info at all, I'd really appreciate. I plan on bringing my big "box-o-coupons" on my trip. If you can recommend any other shopping places, I'd love that too. TIA. Michele

When we lived in North Carolina I really preferred Harris Teeter to Food Lion. I've never been to the Outer Banks, so I can't speak specifically of those stores but in general I've found HT to be cleaner and to have a better selection. This is just my opinion based on the stores in Greenville. I'm going to a town near Duck next weekend for a get-together! I'd never heard of Duck before and now twice in two weeks! Strange...

It is a very nice well-to-do area of Outer Banks - one of the wealthier areas of Outer Banks in my opinion. I prefer HT to FL because they double Q's up to $0.99 every day. I agree that they tend to have cleaner stores than FL does, but with FLIP's you can really get some good deals at FL. Check out the current FLIP's here: http://www.afullcup.com/forums/food-...-flips-33.html HTH!!

I'm in Wilmington and love love HT--great store, great service, great couponing stuffs... I go to FL because of the FLIPS, but that's about it. The other thing is that HT takes FL's FLIPS soooo....yeah. I'd definitely recommend checking out the HT forum for the week you'll be there. Ooh, almost forgot--the other big reason I go to FL is for their blinkies. HT's don't double, but FL's still do when taken to HT. |

I have a house in South Nag's Head, and have shopped at both the HT and the FL on the OBX. Both are ok, but the HT is a nicer, bigger store for what has been said above. I don't think the prices are terrific, however when compared to inland stores. When you are over the bridge, everything costs more - and as was said above, Duck / Corolla are the much higher end areas of the Outer Banks. Shop at both, but don't be surprised if you don't find fabulous deals, even with coupons. I always hit FL there anyway, because they carry White Lily flour and I usually cart 3-5 bags back to MD with me. It's a little easier to find up here than it used to be, but I still carry flour back to MD with me. It's a ritual.

I've only been to HT once, in Newport News, VA during a triple coupon week. I really liked the store & am looking forward to the new one in Williamsburg (right at my back door!) Jump onto their website to see if they are having triples or doubles, they should be due for triples as they had triples about the same time Bloom's did last month.... Good luck & enjoy OBX, my favorite restaurant is the Collington Cafe, turn right as if you were going to the airport & keep going. I would make reservations 1st..that is where all the locals go to eat...a little pricy but good for a nice night out.... |

Thanks for the info, but I have a question...What exactly is a FLIP??? Oh, and Mauroveen - what is White Lilly flour?? Why is special to you? Thanks again.

White Lily is only distributed in the South. Here in MD I'm just enough North that it is hard to find - but with HT coming to Maryland, they carry White Lily - so I am looking forward to it. Bring a bag home from the beach if you are a cook and try it yourself. I love the stuff.

I have heard also that once you cross that bridge everything is more. After Memorial day things go up again. Buy before you get there, keep coupons for shopping , but most of the food buy before the bridge. Mary |

| For the past 3 triples events, they've been 6 weeks apart, so yeah, the next one is expected mid-May. Wilson, NC is a different story w/ it's own unique events for whatever reason.

I have been to OBX often, and I agree with what most have said. The HT is a nice store but a bit pricy. There are a few FL's down the main drag the opposite way from Duck, and they are ok. I usually bring a lot of stuff in the car in a cooler and dry stuff like cereal and poptarts that I bought ahead of time with coupons. This way you need only shop for fillers. Make sure you go to the fruit stands on the way before the bridge-they have nice stuff and it will be better then the supermarket produce.

If you stop at the Grandy market in Grandy, they also have a frozen yogurt stand that is very reasonable and good. The market is usually packed, but they have some neat (EXPENSIVE) stuff. Fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods, dressing, etc. It is open, which is also kind of neat.

I buy White Wheat in bulk (actual wheat kernals) & grind it to make bread & rolls....I usually pay $5 for a #10 can of wheat. Each can yields about 5 lbs of flour.

You will need store discount cards for both stores. Food Lion has the MVP card, I can't remember what HT's is called. I've only been to HT twice and it wa really nice, but not close to me. FL is good if you can find a newer one. We have both here and I prefer the newer one. Have fun in Duck. It's very pretty there.

I have stayed in Duck a couple of years now and shopped groceries at FL both times. There are two. One down towards Corolla and one when you enter the island or inlet..whatever it is! The HT is expensive. I sent DH to get a few things and he refused to buy some of them because they were outrageous! I found the food lion to be normal prices and this was before my supercouponing kicked in. Good luck...we just got back from FLorida vacation and I brought my coupon binder and even went to CVS and WAGS since they were all 2 minutes from our place. It was well worth it and I did not feel guilty about all the money we spent elsewhere. GOOD LUCK!

My mother in law goes 3 times each summer to OBX & we have joined her fairly often. She & everyone else we know that goes there always buys there groceries ahead of time. We've shopped at both stores & the prices are really high, so if you are looking for the best deal, do that before you leave home. While we are there, we just shop at a local small grocer in Nags Head since the prices are about the same & you don't have the hoards of people that the other stores have. Hope you have a good time & the weather stays warm for you! |
