So this morning I went into my usual wags to buy three things: Peter Pan peanut butter ($2.29) and two clearance items, a reach toothbrush ($0.74) and reach floss ($1.12). I had two manufacturer's coupons: $0.50/1 PP peanut butter and $3/2 reach/listerine items. So far, so good, right? Now each item was clearly marked with a price tag. When I handed the cashier my coupons, however, she voided out the toothbrush and floss, and rang them up for $1.50 each. I protested, saying that prices cannot be changed just because I want to use a coupon. What usually happens is the extra from that coupon ($1.14) should have just been applied to the rest of my purchase, correct? I'm registering a complaint with Wags customer service, but I want to know Wags policy. Previously, I thought that they just took off the full value of the coupon, whether it was more than the purchase or not? The weirdest part is, I did a deal similar to this yesterday when I was in the same Wags with the same cashier! (bought a clearanced toothbrush @ $.74 and used $1/1 coupon, $0.26 of which went to another item, no problem). Also, in general, I know some stores may mark a coupon down to the value of the item it is applied for (like at CVS) and I'm ok with that. Here, it seems to me though, that marking UP the price of an item just because I want to use a coupon is either false advertising or discrimination... |

At my Walgreens the cashiers will either a) adjust the value of the coupon down to match the items selling price, or b) apply overage to the remainder of the order. I've never heard of them raising the price back up just because you are paying with coupons. I'd go back and ask to speak with the manager. Maybe a couple minute conversation could solve the problem. Although, if the same cashier did the transaction yesterday and today could not, perhaps she was told something by the manager. If this is the case I'd be interested in hearing the managers explanation and I'd definitely try to resolve this at the store level.

Overage is a big YMMV. I don't think there really is a policy regarding that. The cashier may be wrong in adjusting the price up and not the coupon value down but in any case you got the items free. Other cashiers won't even let you use your coupon if you're getting overage. If I were you I'll just let it go.

I would also just let it go this time. But next time I would ask to see a manager. I don't think you can mark a price up to use a coupon. You can mark a coupon down. And the overage is definently a YMMV thing. But good luck on whatever you do.

At my store there are four registers (two in the front, one at photo, and one in jewelry). For some reason, only the jewelry one allows overage. Whenever I come in they always have me check out there as they know the three other registers will beep when I try and use the coupons. Did you check out at the same register both days? |

I would be upset to see them raise the price of an item up since you are using a coupon, because the tax will be higher. If they have to adjust anything it should have been the coupon to .74

maybe the cashier got confused. just double check with manager. mis-communication between managers and cashiers happen all the time. maybe manager told cashier to "make item same price as coupon" but meant "make coupon same price as item" so no overage. i would just bring your receipt back and get price fixed or return items. if you didnt buy them, try again and ask for manager when cashier does the same thing -changing price of item.

Also....wouldn't walgreen's be cheating the manu . Walgreen's would then be getting back more than what they actually should have sold the product for. Is this making sense ??? They should have either adjusted the coupon or given u the overage. I have always been given the overage. I would talk to the mgr because that cashier could be doing something that could get the store in trouble . I hope i made sense...i'm confusing myself which isn't hard to do... |

If I do come across a situation where the cashier does adjust the coupon value down, as soon as I get home I've begun to call the store manager, their corporate office, and send an email to the product manufacture telling them I was only reimbursed partially for using their coupons. Eventually I figure this will never be a problem any more, or the stores will come and hunt me down... |

Last time, I had a coupon value over the item price and the cashier refused to use it and he said he cannot bring the value of the coupon down

the last few times I tried to used a coupon that was for $1 and the item was 99 cents I was told I couldn't use the coupon ~ bummer for me... it would be nice though if all stores followed the same coupon policies, at least within the same chains!

I agree, this is tricky for everyone (consumers and cashiers). Technically, the coupon "has no cash value" so if all rules were followed then no one would ever get the overage $ to go towards their other items. I would have probably just let it go though.

Now raising the price more would not go well with me- we pay nearly 10% tax before all coupons! |

My stores will not adjust a coupon down! So if its a clearance item, and I want it, I have no problem with the Item price being raised to cover the MQ, and all I have to pay is tax. Paying tax is better deal, than not getting the item ( just my opinion) |
