"It's against the law to adjust coupons"

I had trouble trying to use the Febreze coupon on clearance candles yesterday, said they couldn't adjust the coupon.

I go to get the Garnier this morning at a different store. Their IVC wouldn't work, then when she saw I had the $1 coupons she told me it was against the law to adjust coupons and that I couldn't use both coupons. WHAT??? So I told her to take them off my order (had 8 of them) and went to another WAGS and got them no problem.

Has anyone else heard this craziness???

Did you get them to scan the Easy Saver coupon first? You have to do that and then hand them the $1.00 coupon. Plus you will need to buy a filler to take care of the .01 overage on each one. Like a pencil or something cheap.

Yes, my stores always make sure to do the WAGS coupons first. Even when she tried to punch the numbers in it wouldn't work.
I had gotten several other items with the order also to cover the few cents in overage.

Joystew has posted more than 10 good deals
I was told at one Walgreens and at a Walmart that it was coupon fraud to adjust the coupon, but my other one takes it no problem.

It's probably only against the law if it benefits us, not them. KWIM?

Some stores are having a problem with the IVC $2 coupon. For some reason, it's not working. It worked fine at one store, and the other 2 had to adjust the price to 99 cents.

That's weird that it's working at some and not others. When it didn't work out at the first store I went to, the one up the road worked just fine. Just got home from going to another and that worked fine also.

Why is it against the law? Someone wouldhave to show me that in writing....they still get full coupon value (not the adjusted price) when they send it in plus .08 for handling the coupon.

Thats a YMMV thingy. Some stores are just coupon nazi's, whereas others embrace the idea that people are coming into their stores and buying!!!

that problem usually comes up when the balance after the IVC is scanned becomes lower than the MQ value.

its good you didn't battle with them so you can continue to shop at that store.

one poster has said some stores are now cracking down and have put up signs in their registers on how they want coupons handed to them. its their way or the highway

I'm glad OP has other stores to use her coupons.

I've also heard it's against the law and my guess is that it just might be true. But I don't think it's for the sake of the stores, it's for the benefit of the manufacturers. My complaint against the stores has always been that when they adjust the coupon, I don't get an overage but they DO get an overage. Think of how many thousands of dollars they make in profit off the manufacturer when they adjust literally hundreds of thousands of coupons a year (giving us a portion of the coupon and keeping the full face value for themselves). So Walgreen/CVS/xxx make out like bandits and it's the manufacturer footing the bill. So I'm guessing there may be a law out there to protect manufacturers from stores making this additional profit.

Do I still want them to adjust my coupon rather than not let me get my item? Of course I do. But in my opinion, if the coupon is being used properly, that overage should go to me, the customer, because that's who the manufacturer intended the savings to go to. So I believe the stores should just give us the overage, then they aren't breaking any laws by not adjusting and we get to use our coupons. But I guess they'd rather lose a sale by trying to make us pay .99 and not use the coupon, rather than give us our penny overage.

Just my two cents!

here is my thought..............

i dont care who gets the overage as long as i get my item and the coupon or coupons give me the amount off

like on the garnier after all the coupons i should get the item FREE, so i dont care if the price adjsut it i just want my item.

Let me get this straight here. I thought you needed to give the man q first and THEN the Wag's or IVC q. Now I am hearing just the opposite? I can't keep it straight - someone please help!

Against the Law? I want to know where that law is written. I had a cashier tell me a couple days a go it was illegal to adjust a coupon. She said she had been told that by a lawyer. I asked her for the lawyers name, suddenly she could not remember the lawyers name. LOL.

for the record, if the MQ is given first and the IVC last, there are usually no beeps even if there is overage since IVCs automatically takes off discount x # of items purchased.

however, IF IVC is scanned first and it happens that the balance after IVC is now lower than the MQ,

100% of the time, register beeps since MQ is now over their sale price. sometimes, cashiers can push it through, other times, the register just rejects the coupon.

HTH.

It's not against the law to adjust the price of the item! If they won't adjust the coupon, ask them to adjust the price!!!!!

I always gave the man. q first. Now all the stores around me make sure to scan the IVC first. They've actually voided off my coupons so they'd do the WAGS coupons first. I'm getting very frustrated lately with all their rule changing.

So I told her to take them off my order (had 8 of them) and went to another WAGS and got them no problem.

Has anyone else heard this craziness???
YES!! The Escanaba, MI, store a couple of Mths. ago: I was told the very same thing by one of the older cashiers, who was still yapping about that famous Diaper Deal. She told me that the head of Loss Prevention had been to the store in the previous wk., & said that the coupon is basically a contract between the manfctr. & retailer, & by adjusting the value of the coupon, it goes against the contract.
My Reply: Then How Does Target get away doing the same, exact thing, lowering the value of the coupon to meet the item's price??
She had no answer for that.
She denied my qs on some razors, which would have allowed me to get them for free. She explicity told me"when you are ready to check out, come find me & go over to cosmetics".

I think this is all just smoke & mirrors & NO ONE in Wags knows how to work the cash register to do this.

I can't wait for the closer Wags to open this summer. The one I go to know, on the average once/mth., is 55 mi. one way, & the new store will be 35 mi. one way.
& will see what they do with qs like this.
Oh, just thought of this: I did NOT have Any problems w qs 2 yrs. ago this Feb. when I shopped at the Plant City, FL Wags.

What has changed????

I would think you would want to do the BOGO first - they look back at the price and will take the FULL price off in that case. Then, the Easy Saver q will take $ off as well. I have usually had it take $ off both, even with the BOGO q - but this may be YMMV.

But, if cashiers are insisting on the IVC first - then that makes that impossible.

I usually end up going to the beauty counter to check out anymore - the BAs in general are MUCH more friendly!

HTH.
Yes, I did Exactly this 2 mths. ago, & the cashier STILL refused to adjust the qs price or even take the q!!!

I've said this same in several posts here on AFC: especially Target: The store gets reimbursed for the price of the coupon, not the item, yet keeps the difference between the q & item ONCE from the Customer then a SECOND TIME when the q is reimbursed. Someone here wrote that that is not how it works, make a double profit off the price difference between the q & item, but not how I Look at it! I say that this practice is Against the law!! The retailer is stealing from the coupon customer!!
