-Cache will close 14 stores out of 295 (but still opening new stores)
-Pacific Sunwear closed some underperforming stores
-Footlocker closed 247 outlets (out of 3700) in 2007 and 60 in 2008. more closures likely.
-Wickes Furniture closing down
-Levitz closing down remaining stores
-Bombay closing remaining stores
-Whitehall closing all stores
-Disney closing 98 stores after being reaquired
-Home Depot closing 15 stores
-Macys closed 11 stores
-Linens and Things closing all stores
-Movie Galley -filed chapter 11, still operating 3500 outlets
-Pep Boys Closed 31 underperforming stores
-Ethan Allen closed down 12 retail stores and 2 service centers in 2008
-Wilson Leather closing down all mall based stores (outlets and e-commerce remaining open)
-Sharper Image closing down all stores
-Dillard's to close 21 outlets and more in 2009

Thanks! I recently had this problem. I had received a gift card to a restaurant, and a few weeks later the restaurant went bankrupt and closed every single location with no notice. The company wouldn't do anything about the gift cards, and unfortunately it was one of my favorite restaurants.

Just FYI- there was a news story last night about this. Not all of these stores are closing. Circuit City is one that is not. They have filed chapter 11 but will remain open. This list has been circulated on the web and is not official in any way!

Yeah, I wasn't sure how official it was... but either way I thought it was a good thing to be aware of before purchasing any gift cards, especially ones for these stores.

Thanks for the info! A lot of these stores aren't closing for good, they are just cutting out stores that don't profit to save money. The gc's would certainly be good at other locations

So here's my question though- even if they are closing their stores wont they still be online companies? i mean goody's i know has closed a LOT of stores but are still online etc. just curious

Don't want to burst anyone's bubble here, but the majority of this list has been floating around the last 2 yrs., & always seems to reappear towards the Holidays. If you check it out at snopes.com, you will see it is only partially true.

There is a commercial on TV (local), stating they are closing. I don't have a store local, but the commercial has been running for several days now.

Be Careful, Both Ann Taylor and Eddie Bauer sent me emails saying that they are not closing and were aware of these "lists". Keep in mind that if the store in your area is closed because they are not performing, gift cards can still be used online. Like mpbnursey said this has been going around for years.

AND Always, If you are in doubt that something like this that you "hear" in your emails, go to snopes.com & type in whatever it is you are questioning, as that is all this site does, validate if things flying around on the web are ACTUALLY true.
For instance, type this in @ snopes.com's Search box: catherinse closing.
& the information will come up that this is False.
Same thing when you get those jokie emails or looks like cut/pasted pics of a croc swimming w a deer in its mouth, check it out at snopes.com for authenticity, Instead of Just Passing Untruths around.

Steve & Barry’s has thrown in the towel. The company will close all 173 of its remaining stores and liquidate about $250 million of merchandise. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July, 2008 hoping to reorganize its operations and stay in business. But just like with Linens ‘N Things, things did not work out as planned as the current economic downturn takes its toll on retailers. The company announced last week that it plans to liquidate the remaining stores by early 2009.

FYI...just got an email from Pac Sun. They are not closing. They are aware of the lists circulating. I think a good rule of thumb is that until a specific store announces closing, I wouldn't worry about what's on the web. For example, Mervyn's in LA closed a couple years ago. As with all info on the web, research before you believe. If you want to purchase a gift card, you can always contact the corporate office of a store and see if they are closing in your area.
