The weirdest issue w/ CVS card

I went yesterday to CVS to get my deals. I did very well. I started out with a balance of $98 (after sales, but before Qs), then got the total down to $45.

I noticed before leaving the check-out counter that my $5 ECBs for buying $15 in clean & Clear products were not printed. The cashier referred me to the manager, telling me that he would likely give me a $5 gift card. (Fine with me.)

The manager looked at my receipt, and there was a message that said, "There is a problem with your Extra Care card. Call us at ...."
He took $5 from the register and noted it on my receipt. (I wasn't expecting cash, just a store card.)

I called the CVS number on the receipt, and the girl said that the last time I used my CVS card was 07-13. I told her that, no, it was 07-20. She had me look on my receipt from yesterday, and the last four digits on the card scanned were different from my card.

She asked several times if the cashier could have scanned a store's card. I handed the cashier my own card, and I saw her scan it. Unless she's a talented magician, then that's what she did.

The lady on the phone said that there was nothing wrong with my own card, but couldn't tell me what the problem is.

I'll be over there in 30 minutes to pick up a prescription, so I'll see what the receipt says.

Has anyone had this happen?

I wonder if there was already an order started when she scanned your card?

No...but Sat night I purchased 15 of the clean and clear in two transactions. 1st transaction I bought 1 item, receipt had correct total toward reward on bottom. Second trans I bought 2 more that put me over the $15, the total on the bottom didn't pick up both items and no ECBs. The manager was no help. Sunday I went and did a nother shop and the receipt showed the right total. I called the 1-800 today and I will have to wait 48hrs but I will get my 5ECBs.

Hmm, that's odd. It could just have been some type of glitch. Hope they are able to fix it up for you.

I wonder about some of the cashiers myself....

they could be tricky if not watched carefully. I know sometimes I'm still putting things up to scan as they are scanning/bagging, and having multiple orders can get hectic at times.

I bought a $25 GC about 2-3 weeks ago... tucked it away in my wallet for times when my ECBs are low....Pulled it out yesterday to use it and it had a zero balance. (What the H????) It was still attached to the original cardboard card, and I had written $25 on it in perm marker...Now I wish I had my receipt to match up the numbers, but the cashier thru the card in the garbage after she scanned it. (I used 3 GCs: 2 with small amounts like $1.27, .63 on them, then the $25 card.) It all happened a bit too quickly for my liking... but it really made me wonder if I had ever gotten the right one at the time of purchase. You can bet I'll keep close track of them from now on....

I'm thinking it was a glitch too. The lady at the CVS 800 sounded as if she were trying to pin it on the cashier, but I don't think it was the cashier. If she did have another order open and another card had been scanned, I don't think it was purposeful.

When I went today to pick up some Rx, my card scanned fine. It also scanned well on the scanner and scanned well when I purchased some sale toothpaste.

Something similar to this did happen to me! My dh went to pick up two Rx about a month ago, and while there he bought my kids each a summer toy. When he got home, I told him I wish I'd known he was going to do that because I would have given him my card to put the purchases on for my quarterly total. He said he thought they did go on it because a card number was on his receipt. So I looked at my last receipt and his reciept and EVERYTHING matched! Right down to the ECB limits on the bottom of the receipt. But at the top, where the card number is, they numbers were different. Instead of being (example) 1234 they were 4123. But the total definitely counted towards my EC account. He thinks my card must be linked to his prescriptions somehow, which is the only way they could have added it to my account, but why would the last four numbers be different? Is that some kind of security measure?

I had a manager tell me once that when they enter your phone number, the system will leave the last number off.

I have read on other deal sites about people getting that message before: "There is a problem with your Extra Care card. Call us at ......." and then something about reference code HC123 I think. The 'HC' means 'hot card'. Some think it's a random glitch in the system, some think it's from using too many of the same cvs coupon too often, some think it happens if you use the card too frequently (like several times a day back-to-back or something), and some think the 'glitch' is only triggered when you are doing a huge order using a lot of ecbs. I don't know.

My cashier did randomly mention something interesting the other day. Someone in front of me in line did not have a CVS card, so of course I offered to scan mine (building up the quarterly ECBs, of course LOL). So then I was chatting w/ the cashier while she was ringing me up, and I asked when people don't have a card if they are supposed to scan one off of the stack of new cards that they hand out or if it's a universal store card or something. She said that they have to scan the universal store card, b/c if they scan one of the new cards too many times in a day it gets tagged as a 'hot card' and it can get them in trouble. She seemed to think that the magic number was '3'. I'm wondering if your cashier scanned a card off of the stack and it was too many times for that card. Did any of the other information on the receipt match the info for your card? Like the yearly savings, quarterly spending, deals completed, etc? If not then I would suspect that the cashier scanned either her own card or one off the stack, and I would go return all the items and purchase them appropriately on your own card.

Just saw your update... If your card is working fine now, then I really think she didn't use your card on that order that came up weird. Once that funky message appears, it's supposed to not go away, and your card is not supposed to print or let you use ecbs anymore until you call CS and have them mail you a new card. So I don't think she used your card...
