Rude/cranky cashiers How do you handle them? Stay away from that store? Stay away when s/he is working? Ignore it? Just wanting some input from others.

don't let them get to you. just have all your coupons/ecb's ready and be polite and get out as fast as you can with your cheapies. I try to aviod the ones i don't like (ie there is a shift manager at one store that is usaually very snippy) but if her line is the only one open, I don't really have a choice!

I know exactally what you mean. I went to the only CVS here in Greensboro that has a scanner and the cashier was so rude and questioned every coupon. I am always super careful with my coupons and he told me that the 3/15 that has CVS on it was not legit!!! And the worst part of this story is that my sister went to the exact same one today and called me and asked if the cashier was the same person I had and it was!!!! I won't put his name in here but we both checked his name tag and he was super rude.

I got super frustrated today and wanted to put my stuff down for a second. But then, when I remembered what I was getting and how much it costed, I just stayed there long enough to finish up the transaction and go home grouchy. If you go there often enough you can learn when they're working and try to avoid that shift. Other than that, I can't think of much. I would say to annoy them with more complaints and be just as picky to them as they are to you but that wouldn't be nice and would just make things worse. Lol, would be fun for a bit but wouldn't accomplish much. Just remember, there is usually someone else in the store you can talk to. Maybe question their cashiering skills enough and it will draw attention to the situation (in a review, store meeting...). That, or just be known as the couponer that complains a lot to the cashiers.

Just remember that cashiers are people too, with hectic lives, customers venting away at them all the time, all while trying to keep their cool. The old saying of catching flies with honey really does work most of the time! We have lots of members here that are cashiers and threads like this get upsetting to them, so I hope everyone keeps that in mind when they respond.

What about rude/cranky customers? ![]() MaxxMe said it best. We're all HUMANS in the end. Everyone has a bad day, makes mistakes, etc. It'd be so much better if customers AND cashiers would understand this and work together. It's usually silly yet ridiculous the sort of petty things people get upset over and it goes both ways. Customers get upset that a 25 cent manufacturers coupon won't go through or be accepted, and at the same time some cashiers get upset to see people walk out of the store paying only $1 for $50 worth of stuff, legitimately. Oh well. Personally I have much more important stuff to worry about than such petty things. Why ruin your day over a coupon or what someone else does?

I am not referring to the extreme ends of the spectrum. IE: a cashier just having a bad day and/or a customer pitching a fit over a $0.25 coupon. I am referring to the CONSTANTLY rude cashier who is always unfriendly. IMO, there is a big difference. Those are the ones to which this thread is referring.

Well, if they're truly being rude and they are all the time, maybe it's time to approach a manager about it? If you're going to be in retail, then you know what the job entails. If you don't like it (the job), and are going to constantly be rude, then I think it's time to find something else that makes them a little happier. Personally, retail is a breeze. I'm part time and only work a shift or two a week now because I've moved on to another job more in line with the career I want - which is a whole different form of customer service. I deal with people who probably hate me, don't want to be there, spit on ya, would probably kill me if they had the chance, etc. on a daily basis now.Anyway, I see what you mean and to stay on topic, either talk with the manager or avoid their shift (which you shouldn't have to work around their schedule). If someone doesn't want to do their job, they don't need to be there. |

I just put on a big goofy smile and act oblivious to his/her mood. Pleases and thank yous also go a long way...well, most of the time. Some crankier cashiers just have a cloud over them but most perk up and smile back by the end of the transaction. Here's my cheese for the day... If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours. I think I learned that in kindergarten and it's stuck with me through the years.

Our cashiers at the 3 CVS in my area are really great. Most go out of their way to be helpful. The other day one said she was sorry for being gloomy but she was having a bad day. Her BIL passed away and a relatives family lost their home in the tornado last month and she had been trying to help their family of 5. We all do have bad days, I try to always be happy, and also use please and TY. I have seen some crabby customers in there. If someone was really bad I would talk to the manager. Life is too short.

Kill them with kindness... easier said than done. I had a rude MANAGER today. Still debating on what to do about it. I felt like pure and utter sh*t when I left the store and I didn't do a thing wrong.

OK probably not going to be popular with this comment but, here goes... I've actually asked (habitually) rude employees, "Are you rude to everyone, or is it just me?" when I was tired of their treatment. (Not at CVS but grocery stores.) Worked pretty well for me. I got two apologies, and one dead blank stare--never could figure out the stare but she also doesn't work there anymore so I never worried about it.

Sometimes they make me grumpy too - until I walk out of there is my stuff! Then I'm on that "high" and happy as a clam! Don't let 'em get you down!

stay away from the store if you can help it. Stay away from his/her sift if you can help it. stay away from checking out with him/her if you can help it. try to keep your plan fool proof. (i.e. if you know that your coupon is legit, but still beeps, then I would consider saving that transaction for some other day when he/she is not working, and do that transaction with someone else instead.) Be prepared to pay extra money just in case. Be friendly and nice, if he/she is cranky, be nice to him/her anyways and thank him/her for doing your transaction. If he/she is really rude and you think this must stop, then report that cashier. keep your receipt and get his/her name so you will have a reference when you report.

I worked in retail for a few years, so I know what it's like to get tired of customers who give you hassles. However, I also remember that we were expected to treat the customer respectfully and courteously regardless of how they treated you. Sure, people are human, but where my beef comes in is that many times, couponers receive poor treatment not because they are rude or crabby, but simply because they used lots of coupons. My opinion is that if a cashier is going to be nasty, it should at least be because you were nasty first, not because you made her register beep or walked out paying $1 for $50 worth of stuff (no offense intended to CVSemp). Coupons are legitimate forms of payments, and our extra bucks are hard earned by vigilant clipping, ad-reading, and hours of internet research and crunching numbers. If it wasn't profitable for stores to do ECB's, RR's or coupons, they wouldn't do it. So it would be nice if cashiers didn't treat us like we were stealing.

I avoid them if I can and if I can't I try to be very nice so they don't hassle me. Some people don't need to be working with the public!

I like to smile and say something like 'are you having a bad day'. I usually get that shocked look.
