Question Purchasing GCs w/ GCs?

I've been doing the CVS thing for about a year, but am still learning

For those of you are more "seasoned" pros, is it true that you cannot purchase a GC with a GC? If that's the case, what if you had a large $$ amount GC, but wanted to split it into smaller GCs, say to gift or something?

My CVS won't allow you to use a GC if you are purchasing a GC in the same transaction. If I were you, I would purchase items worth the amount you want the smaller GC's to be and then return them. Say you have a $100 GC, buy 4 $25 items. Then, return them with the receipt, one at a time. They will give you a $25 GC for each item. Do you know what I mean?

I know you can not purchase a GC with a GC. They dont like the "money" to move in that fashion as it is hard to track as far as paperwork goes.

As far as breaking one apart, I dont think you can outright do it. The best bet is to do something like Adamsmom suggested. Though, I think you will have a hard time getting a nice even number for each of the individual gift cards. Chances are you will end up with like $24.57 as the total on the individual gift cards.

so to get around that you could buy 4 $20 items... return them one at a time... So the gift card amount would be between 21 and 22 depending on your tax rate. then go up and just add cash to the card to get it to a even 25...

Hope that makes sense
