ok so i bought a bunch of stuff using tons of coupons and a 5 off 30 etc etc. my original total was $46 and after coupons it was $4 and something but then it jumped up to almost $10 after tax. after looking over my receipt in the car i noticed i was taxed on the total BEFORE coupons were deducted. is this right? i don't have an extra $10 to blow on a mistake. thanks for any help.

it depends on your state laws... i believe most states will tax on your total BEFORE coupons (which is unfortunate!). what is your tax rate?

yes, I'm in Illinois and we pay taxes on the total before qs. It does stink, but Illinois is in a little financial crisis right now so whatever....

I think it depends on your state but you were charged $10 tax on $46 of items? What tax rate do you have? Thats insane!

This is what happens to me. I always hate that my $0.84 trips become $1.91 trips! But oh well.

I think she meant that her after coupon total $4 and the tax equaled ten dollars together? Anywho, this seems correct to me assuming your merchandise tax is the same or just about the same as it is here where I live, Cook County Illinois (10.75%).

Tax on $46 worth of merchandise (using the 10.75% merchandise tax rate) equals $4.95 if we add in her after coupon total of $4.00 the grand total would be $8.95. I believe that tax is always calculated on the pre-coupon amount in most states however; I do notice this only applies to manufacturer coupons not store coupons.

thanx for your replies. in ca our tax is over 8% i think it is 8.375 and added to the $4 and change total it jumped up adding almost $4 to the total increasing it considerably but now i understand. i guess it stood out to me cause i don't usually swing such high bucks deals. thanks everyone for your help!
