| is CVS illegally taxing Californians?
Ive been noticing something lately that I can't ignore anymore. So today I forgot my coupons at my desk but I needed cashback. I bought the 20 oz ( don't know why because as I'm typing this I remembered 2 L are on sale) for $1.77. Ok we have no tax on food but a bottle deposit of .05. Well it rang up $1.96! Ouch! So I pay anyways and looked at my receipt this time. They made it seem like the bottle deposit was a seperate item and charged .14 tax. Did they change their registers? CVS is the only store doing this. And this isn't the first time it happened to me. Isn't this illegal?

I dunno about CA, but in Texas the soft drink products on the shelf are not taxed because they are considered "not ready to consume" (you would want to chill them or add ice, etc), whereas the items in the cooler are "ready to drink" and therefore are taxable.

In Ohio, soda and juice drinks are taxed-unless it is 100% juice.

| You can also take them to some recycling centers where you put them into an automated dispenser one at a time to get full value back. On a side note, I noticed I also got charged tax when I bought the Starbucks Refreshers when they were a MM at Walgreens which is when I got confused about the whole tax situation and noticed I also got charged tax on 12 packs of soda at Vons.

Tax is charged on all carbonated drinks, including carbonated water, here in CA, I believe. Not just soda. But no tax on crv, which you can get back by doing just like what previous posters said, recycle at the machine or by weight. Sometimes you get more back by weight when the bottles are heavier, like smart water bottles. I find the tax rather silly, so I have to pay tax for Perrier, but I don't for Other water loaded with sugar?! I don't understand the logic! |

I just found this online: "There is no tax if you buy food in a grocery store. If you buy it at a convenience store, cafeteria, or prepared you will pay normal sales tax, as you are paying for the convenience or preparation." hth.

I know in CT, some of the way they tax things has to do with Food Stamps. When I worked in a grocery store years ago, I was basically told if it is taxable, it can't be bought with food stamps... One of things mentioned was anything that was ready to eat/prepared was taxable...it got so crazy though that if you bought a single donut direct from the bakery department it was taxed because of the codes they had to use whereas if you bought it at the front registers, we had to use a different code and it wasn't taxed.
