Discounting tax

So I was really excited last week when my mfr Qs discounted my tax and then again this week with the aqua fresh deal. However I just tried to do the deal again and it didn't discount my tax the register stopped taking Qs when my subtotal hit $0. It was weird. Does anyone know why this happens? I didnt know if it had something to do with the new barcode or what. I was super bummed today I went in expecting to pay .40 and actually paid like $2. My boyfriends like who cares its still super cheap. But I know u all will understand. :-)

Sales tax in most states cannot be paid for with coupons. Also you cannot go below a zero amount at CVS.

I have been below 0 at CVS and had to keep throwing candy on the counter because every candy I threw on took another % off and I ended up throwing 4 candies before I hit a few cents over 0. CVS rule means it will not give you cash back, so you have to add something to get above 0.

To OP I don't know how or why it happens, I live in a tax after coupon state. Sorry for you bad luck today.

CVS Q's will eat into tax. I've been as low as -$4.86 subtotal but tax made my OOP like $.12 cents.

I got an overage a few weeks ago. Now lately the same thing happens, I am told I can't apply anymore coupons because the subtotal is too low.

If CVS coupons will work on tax I suppose I should be giving those coupons last?

It won't matter the order. They will eat the tax regardless. Your only taxed on the amount of the item.

Better example. You buy 10 Starbucks refreshers at $2 each. Then a physicians formula for $18. Use a 4/20, 10 mqs for free refreshers and the $15 CRT for PF. Your subtotal is now -$.82, since your only taxed on $3 of the PF and $20 on the refreshers. Total would be $.58 with 6% tax.

I use to give my Cvs Qs and ecbs last but they adjust those down. When I gave my mfr Qs last it discounted my tax. It's just weird it didn't do it this time. I did the exact same trans 2 times on 2 different days. First time .40 and 2.20 for the 2nd Time. Just didn't know if there was a trick.

Were you at a different store?

I've heard of people who can use coupons on tax - you're not really supposed to and where I live the registers will beep if you try and lock up if the cashiers try to push it through. All tax must be paid using money. Someone thought I might be in an area with newer/different registers? I dunno - they all look the same to me and none of them have ever let me use a coupon to dip into tax no matter what order I give them in.

The ECB's will not eat into your tax if you hand them to them last - It will only allow you to use what is available pre tax

To have your ECB cover tax you need to do your Q's in this order

Total
ECB's
25% off $$/$$$ CVS Q's
CVS Q's and CRT's
Manufacturer Q's

You want your manufacturer q's to be last because those are the only q's they won't adjust at the end (unless of course the item cost less then the q) thus causing your subtotal to go into the negative

I have tried the q's and every different combination of ways and this is the only way that will allow you to go to negative

All CVS Q's and CRTS will be adjusted down to pretax total - I have even had them adjust my $3 off $15 to $2.44 because of the tax

bnorris10 has it about spot on (i have somewhat of a variation of that) .. I will add just a little tidbit as this topic is starting to become more and more controversial as some see it as a responsibility to pay tax.

When using manufacturer coupons last be sure the last coupon you present is for a set $$ off and not one where the cashier enter a value..

for example if you have 3 manufacturer coupon
one for buy x get x free (where value is entered)
one for $3/2
one for $1 off ....

use the bogo coupon first then use the 2 set value manufactured coupons as your last coupon..

if bogo coupon is last you wont go negative and discount tax..

that is all I am going to say at this point in time..

I agree, some ppl may view this as controversial topic, but I also like to point out this is not exactly "discounting"tax, because the portion of the tax charged is still listed on the receipt, the same amount, the question is more about whether your subtotal can go negative.

Example, my last receipt,

Subtotal. -2.10
CA tax. 2.49
Total. .39

So, the 2.49 will still go to the tax authority, no evading tax here.

The question is whether cvs allows the subtotal to go negative or not. And on that, cvs has more than 5 years to correct it by now if the answer is no, (in the first few years, no tax was charged on the portion paid by Extra Bucks at all, and they did change that.)
