The CVS I vowed to which I wouldn't return stated that coupons can't be used on clearance items? Is this true? The Purell sanitizer/moisturizer was marked to $1 and told her I would be back with my coupon.

I shouldn't be surprised...this is the same store whose manager told me the summer clearance wouldn't drop lower than 40%.

mine takes coupons on clearance but if the coupon is for more than the price they just adjust it down

The CVS policy is: You can use coupons towards a clearance item but the coupon will be adjusted if it is more than the price of the item.

However, some stores use those green tags to mark their clearance and the items are keyed into the register as "taxable item". Some cashiers don't know how to manually input a coupon against that "taxable item" so they find it easier just to tell the customer that coupons aren't accepted. (If the coupon is scanned it will beep because item won't be found as purchased -- there's no matching item/coupon since the item was manually entered as a generic taxable item.

That said, it's manger's discretion on whether or not to accept coupons on clearance items. CVS corp will back the manager up on whatever the manager decides.

Whenever it comes to coupons it depends on the store. I know all of us couponers want one hard fast set of rules when it comes to coupon usage, but it's never going to happen. Each manager can decide how coupons can be used. Example - using 2 coupons on BOGO items, using coupons on clearance items, if coupons can be adjusted down, using ip's, etc. Like the PP said, CVS corp will back the decision of the manager so it really doesn't help to call and complain. The best thing to do is go to another CVS and hope they have a more agreeable coupon policy.

I ran into the exact same thing and wrote to Corporate about it. Here is a copy of the response I received. It does not indicate anything about manager discretion except in limiting quantities.

Dear Ms. XXXX,

Thank you for contacting CVS! I am currently in receipt of your e-mail in regards to the coupons. Yes, we do accept manufacturer coupons on clearance items. The cashier may need to adjust the coupon, but there should not be any problem with them accepting it. We do not have an actual coupons policy in writing but I can write out some information for you about it.

CVS/pharmacy does accept manufacturer’s coupons that have been obtained from an approved Web site sponsored by the manufacturer. The coupon should be complete and contain a bar code that can be scanned at the register.

Please feel free to visit www.cvs.com and go to the "Save With In-store Coupons" box and click on "start printing now". To print coupons, check the box next to the Clip! icon, (or click "Select All Offers") and then click "Print Now". Please note that these coupons can be redeemed at CVS/pharmacy stores only and all manufacturer requirements must be met.

Our registers are set to allow 1 CVS coupon and 1 manufacturer coupon per item. CVS Extra Buck coupons are earned when you make a qualifying purchase. These print out instantly at the register upon reaching the threshold for the offer. Free coupons or “offers at the register” are unearned and issued to you as a valued member of the CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare program. These coupons take the form of “open ended” coupons such as $3 off $15 or a certain dollar amount off a specific item. In any given transaction our registers will allow only one “open ended” coupon per transaction and more than one Extra Buck coupon provided the purchase threshold has been met for each offer amount on a per-transaction basis.

In the case where a particular item is on sale for “buy one get one free” (BOGO), you are only allowed to use one manufacturer’s coupon. For instance, if Revlon lipstick is on sale for BOGO, you can use one manufacturer’s BOGO coupon. You would get both items free & pay any applicable tax. The Store Manager can limit quantities.
