What is the difference between giving a "rep" and giving a "thanks" and which is better to give? TY!

You can do either one-- they are essentially the same thing. The difference is that with 'rep' you can leave a little note for the person but it doesn't show up on the post and with 'thanks', everyone can see that you have thanked them.

ETA: I left you both a rep and a thanks for the above post so you can see the difference.
