I agree with many of the earlier posts, it really depends on your families needs. I have 6 people in my family and I have found that I usually buy at least 4 papers a week to maximize my savings. I also belong to 3 trains and trade regularily to get the coupons i need for that weeks sales, or products my family eats regularily. I also always go through my store ads asap as they come out on SAT here for the next week and I will go on ebay and purchase coupons for products that are on sale that are money makers or are running low in my stockpile. I usually try to use "buy it now" auctions to get items fast (and a lot of times cheaper), and check the persons shipping policies (to make sure they ship same day). I usually have all the coupons I have ordered by tuesday and have the rest of the week to shop my sales. I have found this very effective. I use the extras to trade with or send on my trains.
Good luck, experiment to see what works for your family. Want to build up your coupon inventory fast? Buy a couple of ALL FOOD coupon lots off of ebay (usually you can get them for as cheap as 99 cents and get over 100 coupons) pick people who live in a different region than you, as the coupons are usually a little different. I live in MN and I like to buy from the east coast when my supply gets low.
Also, talk to neighbors and friends, many don't utilize their inserts and I am sure they would be more than happy to save them for you.
Investing time in cutting, sorting, and finding will definately save you tons of money in the long run. I used to spend upwards of 500 dollars a month on groceries, now with my coupon i spend less than $100 a month for my whole family (and we like chips, pop and pizza)!
Only buy what you are going to eat. Only keep the coupons in your binder that you would actually use. Have a different basket or something to toss all your extras to use as trades. Find a great deal on something your family dosn't use (such as a certin brand of toothpaste, etc. ) donate it to your local food shelf. I do this regularily with many FREE or nearly FREE items I find. They love it!
Also learn to shop the sales and look at trends. June is dairy month, so you can guess most stores will have ice cream, etc. on sale. Stock up on the items that are on sale that you have q's for. July is famous for grilling items (hot dogs, etc.) condiments (mayo and ketchup) and pop. My freezer is full of free hot dogs, brats, etc. because of my q's.
Enough rambling..........HAVE FUN with it and it won't seem like a job!
