My wonderful neighbor has offered us a chest freezer - for FREE! She doesn't use it anymore, and wants to free up the space in her utility room. I'm so happy!!! ![]() Now, I need help filling it! Looking for great meat buys, mostly. We have Lowes, Food Lion, Super Walmart (I don't really care for their meats), and Harris Teeter not too far away. ??

Now is the time of year for 4H sales at the fair! I usually prefer to buy the carcass hog (below market value) over the live auctions. Also, know of any local farmers? |

well...I am not exactly sure but the one website I found said around $6 per pound for the beef. I looked it up under Eatwild.com The only problem I forsee...is about 1/2 of it is ground beef. Do you use that much gr. beef? Here's one of the local sites... Wells Branch Farm: FAMILY PACKS They also have pigs... I do use a lot of gr pork since we are meatball junkies around here!

$6 a pound for beef? We can get ground beef on sale for $1.69 - $1.99. I never pay more than that. My uncle just bought half a beef and half a hog in Northern WI and paid $2.20 a pound for everything, cut and wrapped. I did pick up the Land of Frost lunch meats with the free coupons today at Wal-Mart. $3.98 each, the coupons are up to $3.99, so they were free!

We use ground beef for tacos, spaghetti, and sloppy joes - but that's about it. I don't think I'd want to pay $6.00/lb... that seems a little steep to me. I'll check out that site, though, and talk to DH about it! Thanks for all the good tips! Does the Land o' Frost freeze well?? |

i know this is strange but make sure you try some fresh meat before you stock up your freezer. my inlaws butchered a cow last year and everyone got a freezer full and i was so excited until i tried to cook the first package. the smell of fresh blood made me puke! i tried to cook it sevral times and just could never get over the smell.

Is it anything like venison? That smell doesn't bother me, although I don't care for the taste! Sucks since DH is a hunter!

I know there were some coupons back a few weeks for the al fresco all natural chicken sausage. I know it sounds gross but they are good they have different flavors like sundried tomato, buffalo style(my dh is in love), and sweet. And they have 70% less fat than the normal stuff. Walmart has them and I believ they were around $3.00 a pack.

I was going to start a new thread on this same subject. We just purchased a new freezer this past weekend and I need to fill it. Other than meat, veggies, and cheese what else is good to freeze?

I think that the best way to stock up is by using rebates. You can stock up on meat when it is cheap & then send in a rebate that requires a meat purchase. Alot of the time you can get all of your money back. Plus there are a lot of summer rebates out there that are good for meat. |
