CAN someone explain double coupons to me?

my local giant eagle advertises double coupons up to .99 cents. I assumed
that if I went in with a coupon for that amount for example that they would give me 1.98 off. But I know that they did not, so do I have to ask for it? Am I doing something wrong? does it actually mean that I physically need 2 .99 cent coupons?
I am off to get my first sunday paper to see the ads , and I need to shop tomorrow, so interested to see how it goes.
Thanks a bunch!

Double coupons means a 0.50 coupon will take $1.00 off your purchase.

And a 0.99 coupon will take 1.98 off your purchase.

You do NOT physically need 2 of the same coupons.

That said, there are usually some rules that follow how double coupons work at your store. I don't shop GE, so I don't know exactly how GE works; but can give you some basic thoughts:

If GE offers a store card, then you need to make sure you have one and that it is scanned before any of the coupons. Most stores that offer shopper cards and offer double coupons have registers programmed to only double the coupons if the store card is scanned before coupons.

If you buy an item that is priced $1.50 and use a 0.99/1 coupon -- it will usually only double the coupon to the value of the item. Thus, you'd only save 1.50

Some coupons just don't double. They are coded in their barcode to NOT double. If your coupon starts with a little 9, it will not double. If it starts with a little 5, it will double.

Hope that helps!
