Battling the exorbitant prices of Halloween costumes

Wife, with all her illusions of grandeur, is currently obsessed with making sure the boys each have exactly the right halloween costume this year. (Both boys want to be Star Wars characters this year, just about anything except Darth Vader. They are 5 and 3.)

She is looking at Target.com and ToysRUs.com, and finding the ones that she likes to be in the area of $40.00 ... each!!

There's got to be a better way!! Can anyone help me??

(The only thought I have had so far is to purchase costumes using the ever-bountiful ECBs flowing from CVS these days, but I have no idea what their selection will be, or if this is a viable option.)

Thank you for any tips you may have to offer!!

I'm not sure on the prices though but I hear they have a lot. I'll see what else I can find.

second hand...my local fave is once upon a child, my MOMS club does an exchange (you should be in/start a DADS club at this point...), Marshall's just sent me something that they'd be doing a big Halloween event this year...ask your neighbors...of course, I say all that and I did buy my oldest the most expensive power ranger costume last year (he HAD to be the captain, he couldn't just be a color...) This year, I didn't give them a choice, 5 YO is being a pirate with this totally cool outfit my parents got him in Turkey (just need a nice hat and a sword), 3 YO is wearing MY puppy costume I wore when I was 3...every other year they get to decide, not this year...

And I didn't know we had same families GBM...NO BARBIES!

Check local thrifts or yard sales. Since Star Wars was so big last year, surely you could find outfits there, but you have to go to them with the mentality that you are only looking for Star Wars costumes...if you piddle, you'll come home with stuff you didn't need! I found a cape last week for 2.00, and back in July when Target had their Star Wars clearance, my son just HAD TO HAVE the Darth Vader voice activated helmet. Not my choice for a costume, but he is 9. The Helmet was only 8.96, and he used his own money...I've gotten out really cheap this year! (Target also had their light sabers on sale...I think they were about 19.99 back in July. You may search SuperTarget.com for Star Wars Clearanced Toys, and be surprised of what they still have. HTH

check ebay --- yea, yea, prices might still be high, but doesn't hurt to check

check JoAnn's -- they have Halloween costumes and there is always the 40% off coupon that comes in their flyer (have to be on their mailing list) every other week

To be honest, I don't have any different ideas than those already given. I'm not much help in this dept as I have made our Halloween costumes for the past 2 years. Yes, I said "OUR" as in "We all dress up!" And this year, Matthew thinks we should all be ghosts. And WHO is going to argue with such an easy idea?

Oh snap!! Why can't we all be ghosts!! These kids are so totally into Star Wars (even tho we don't let them watch the movies), and somebody has planted the bug in their ears that they should be Star Wars guys.

Wife called from Target, and said that she found an Annakin and an Obi-Wan costume for $20 each. That seems to be about as good as I am seeing on the sites you have all passed me (thank you very much), and no shipping. And if CVS has something good, we can always return these.

Thanks for all your help.

For some reason Jake doesn't seem to accept that my costume is "Mommy"....last year I got smart and got some Halloween jeans & he was willing to let me wear those instead of a costume, so I didn't have to be a cat again...

Aww...come on! You can be a cat one day out of the year!

Last year, we were all skeletons.
The year before? Slices of watermelon.
I gotta give M points for creativity on the watermelon idea!

So... if I can be a slice of watermelon, YOU can be a cat!

If so, call me. I have 3 slices: 2 adult sizes and one kid. You'd just have to make one for will. Real easy. Little to no sewing (can't remember if I sewed any of it or just hot glue gunned it).

But I was a cat...that was before I got the jeans...I'm the one in black in the middle, there are whiskers drawn on my face, ears on my head and a ribbon with a bell around my neck...oh, and a tail pinned to my rear...

And no GBM, the jeans are way cool...have all kinds of spooky stuff embroidered all over them. And I can wear them with my *itch boots...

I got them from Cotton Gin down in NC - they have a bunch of cool ones (football, christmas, winter), kind of expensive, and sorry to say, too long for you - I can only wear them if I wear really high heeled boots. You are far too petite.

But, I wanted some other holidays they didn't have, so I got a pair of jeans that fit me (as in I can wear normal shoes), took them to my local embroidery shop and had some made, cost about the same.

Way to hot around here at halloween for the cutesy themed sweaters, so the jeans are perfect!

This is the new pair they have http://www.cottongin.com/viewItem.as...esc=&Search=N#

I think the old ones are better.

Am I having delusions of "shorter than me"?

I'm 5'7" (and long legged) and like I said, I can only wear them with really high heels.

Taking my family's picture off the WWW now and returning to my wine button (just had to prove that I did dress as a cat...)

wine button is not on this computer...liked the spider though

No delusions.

I am shorter than you.

But... no one... at least not to my knowledge.... no one has ever called me petite.

To me "petite" brings to mind size 2 or 4 or 6.... not 8 or 10.

So.... to call me petite was just wonderful.
