I've been working on pinwheel ornaments made with fabrics from the 1940s this week. They're very easy to make.

A lot of the directions I've read are no-sew, where you using fusing in between 2 pieces of fabric to make a double-sided piece. I think the stitching adds to the "country" look of it, so I've sewn mine. I add either an extra 1 or 2 layers of cloth or a piece of cardstock. The cardstock has been the best for keeping its shape.
I'm not a perfectionist and a lot of my lines are crooked.

Draw square 4 -6" each side
Cut fabrics and/or paper
Mark dots on one of the fabrics in the stack so that you know where to sew to and where to cut to. Mark center also, so you know where to fold to.
Sew around outside of square.
Cut to dots with pinking shears if you want that jagged edge finish.
Sew along cut lines
Fold corner of each cut section down to center dot. Sew it down.
Sew a button in the center to hide the stitching, secure the corners better, and give it a finished look. Mine in the picture aren't completely finished. They were my trial runs.

I used a medium weight muslin and feedsack cottons. You could use regular cotton/poly from the fabric store, or recycled fabrics from clothes or linens (fabric needs to be somewhat stiff, so knits wouldn't work well). You could also use paper and stitch or glue the pieces together.

Rootbeer Reindeer

Here's a really cute idea in giving a gift to someone. I found this on life of a modern day mom blog.

Holiday Lighted Balls

One of my friends has one of these hanging up on her patio yesterday. It is so cool. It is made out of clear solo cups that were stapled together and lights are coming out from the middle. I found some directions if you are interested for a metallic one. My friend's decoration was clear w/lights in it like the one below.

All I could think of is that it might make a cute wedding decoration, too!

Metallic Solo Cup Sparkle Ball
