Scissors Get Crafty! (July 2014)

I did some reorganizing last month, so I'm really hoping to get a little crafty in July. Even my kids have been asking to paint!

What are your crafty goals this month?

I made a skirt out of a pair of slacks that were too tight and way to low rise for the office. I had doubts but I finished it. I can now say that I up-cycled something.

I just tonight finished a nightgown for my youngest made from an old navy clearance Curious George tshirt. I'll post pics after I wash it tomorrow. Not a big transformation but I had to remove and reset sleeves and that's why I delayed that project for a full year after I bought the shirt.

I'd love to see a pic of the skirt you made!

Sounds great sar1 sounds like a great project. I will post pics sometime tomorrow when I wear it to the office. Any other ideas on how I can recycle some of my other clothes into new onces?

Sar1 has done some GREAT upcycling! Check out the other "Get Crafty" threads in the craft forum, and I think the 2013 Craft Challenge thread has some.

Aw, Brie, that was really kind. Thank you. Ytelmar, I find ideas on Pinterest - just search upcycle or refashion.

I never got to complete my desk project from June (I want to use Modge Podge and cover a desk with old love letters), so that's on the list - I bought some cheap canvases from Michael's, and I want to paint those with some quotes. (:

Here's the tshirt nightgown. It was the right length to start with. I had to cut the sleeves off at the seam, take in the sides in the top third, make the neckline a little smaller, and reset the shorter sleeves. I was able to get a little bit of a puff sleeve going with the excess width in the original sleeve. I kept all the original hems at the sleeves, neck, and bottom and it made life much easier.

That's on my list for the next few months. How does it hold up in the wash? Does it take forever to dry?

I tried a Pinterest idea this afternoon. Trace a coloring book picture on to watercolor paper, using a sharpie. Then color in with watercolor pencils to create paint with water sheets. It didn't work that well but I did buy the cheapie watercolor pencils so that could be why. The Minnie Mouse one was the worst. Barely any color at all. Except for the vibrant Dorito crumbs!
Eta - the second Ariel pic is already partially painted with water. You can barely tell.

My goal is just to get my craft room organized! It's such a disaster that there is no creativeness flowing.

These are the tie dye pillowcases I made w my kids and nieces last week. They're still wet here but only slightly less bright after washing and drying and they're not stiff. It was an easy project. I used watered down acrylic craft paint (w a few drops of fabric medium, too) instead of dye.

Trying to find a flat spot so I can use my sewing machine and take my serger lesson that I got online! Goal for the summer was to get projects finished. So far stamped a set of notecards for a friend's birthday; made a "cake plate" from two plates , a plastic martini glass and a glass lamp shade; and repaired a wooden stool that lost the battle with "bigfoot".

Sar1- I really like your tie dye and will have to remember to water down the acrylic paint- dye is just so expensive.

Any pictures of your projects?

This was where I got the idea for the paint tie dye: Pin by Ann Kemm on Kid's Crafts | Pinterest I didn't use a plastic bag, just rubber gloves. I already had a few squirty bottles in my craft stash but also picked up the set of 2 picnic style mustard and ketchup squeezy bottles from the dollar spot at Target. They were great and easy for little hands to squeeze. I was much less scared of using watered down paint vs dye, especially with the kids handling it. But my favorite flip flops now have a permanent splash of purple on them b/c I didn't rinse quickly enough.

This is a maxi skirt I made for my daughter from a clearanced women's pajama top from Target. I had the pink jersey fabric at the waistband left over from another project. It's a tad shorter than I envisioned bc it was a v-neck top and so I lost a little length in the front. She is really happy with it.
