I was so nervous about it. I think it went okay, but know that i could have done much better. I get so excited about teaching something when I am good at it. My next class is on Wed. I really need to have a more detailed way of going through it.
Hopefully many of the people in the class will join AFC!!!

i was thinking about starting up something at a local church.. or anywhere, really. but i don't know how to organize all my thoughts. i mean, i just already know most things instinctually, it's hard to teach all that to someone else.

Ok this may sound bad but.... I've often thought about doing the same thing but we live in such a small area I can't afford to have that much competition. Granted the majority i'd assume don't take it to the level of stockpiling but I only have a walmart and target. Our next closest cities with walmart, Kmart and walgreens is about 1 1/2hrs either direction. And that is why i never clear shelves either. I remember before i did coupons going to walmart to get something and the self is empty you'd either have to go pay more somewhere else or wait a few days for them to stock!!

How many people are in your class? Do you charge?

Congratulations!! And welcome to the wacky world of teaching adults. I taught adults how to use their computers until I became disabled. If you need any help with anything, including how do you face a room of strangers, let me know. Best tips: If you are in a classroom setting, get some get some cardstock sheets, cut them in half, fold them in half. Have a black sharpie and pass it around and have everyone PRINT their name on the card and set it in front of them. Then when you're teaching you can call people by name, and not have to try and memorize. Also, make sure you have scheduled breaks. Let everyone know, at the beginning of the class you'll be taking breaks, take a 10-15 in the morning, same in the afternoon, and lunch. The smokers will thank you. Did you give any handouts? If you have any notebooks that you bought on back to school clearance or even just filler paper, you might make that available for notes, and take some pens.

I am thinking about doing something similar. If I decide to do it I am going to wait until all the after school things are on clearance to get some organizers and what not for people to start off at. That way they feel like they're getting more for their money.

What are or would you charge for a class? I'm currently thinking of doing one for a food bank. This particular food bank tries to help teach people how to streach their food budget with cooking classes, I think a coupon class would be welcome, too.

If you are wanting to start teaching, try volunteering like that to "hone your skills" as a teacher. Most people have issues getting up in front of people. If you are going to charge, you better be smooth. Do a good deed, AND pick up some skill. Win/win

P.S. I would not be charging at the food bank, that is just a good works class.

Yay! I taught one to my play group moms- there were 35! It was fun for me, I haven't taught in the classroom for a few years, so I really enjoyed making my "lesson plan" ! Ppl keep telling me that I should start a business conducting these types of classes, but I have no idea or time really to do something like that.

Hello teacher! I was in your class today and you did great! I got a lot of great tips! I put the new skills you gave me to work tonight! I hit 2 Shaw's stores and a CVS !!! I did amazing tonight and will be going back tomorrow to make a few more runs to stock on diapers and stuff !

I didn't charge for the class or for the copy of the book that I had written either. As I saw it I was teaching my "WEX FAMILY" aka my co-workers. Our company is kinda of small, and feels like family and I would have felt like a heel for charging. One I have my lesson plan typed up I will post.

I've done 1 class and getting ready to do 2 more now. I do not charge for my class either because I think it's hard enough to save money without having to spend it to save more?! HAHHAHA something like that...

I do these through my church mostly too and utilize a room from them. They make copies of my handouts (I've kept it to a min) and it's lots of fun!!! I get reports from people from time to time now about how much they've saved. I'm so glad to have helped!!!

Having a coupon class is a great idea but offering follow-ups would be great too. You can not learning everything in one session and leave thinking that you are not going to have questions or concerns after you go out and put your lessons to the test. I know that I spent two hours with an AWESOME coupon queen trying to teach me all the savings and I still have lots of questions and trial and error to do. But I do know that she is there for me as a follow-up to help with anything I need.

Just a head's up for anyone who has not been involved in such things....For whatever reason, this group (food bank/pantry clients) is tough. You have some who want to be self sufficent and want to learn...and then you have others who would prefer a handout. It is hard to keep a positive attitude. I focus on those who want to improve and try to be understanding of the rest.

If you have never taught before, don't worry if it takes a little bit of time to get it all together. I've learned everyone on AFC is really very smart. I would attempt to funnel all of your students on to AFC. make sure and check your local library, most have free computers. This is helpful for families who don't have a computer in their home.
