When is it "safe" to throw out old inserts?

Hey Everyone!

My filing cabinet is getting super duper full and I'm wanting to clean out without going through every single insert... how long should I keep my inserts?

Past 6 months?
Past 12 months?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you

My bottom line is: it is never safe until it expires! I go through my inserts and cull out the ones that are expired and keep the page that still has a good one...even if I don't think I would use it. It happened to me last week when Kmart was having their doubles. I don't have a cat, but I kept a Whiskas cat food BOGO Q from a few months ago. I ended up getting two cans of cat food for each Q I had. My great niece has a cat so she got the supply. I have had WAGs come out with a RR deal that i could roll older RR into and I was glad I kept the older Qs. I guess it is just a personal choice! Some Qs are good for nearly one year from when they appear in an insert, but most expire within a few months.

I keep about 2 months worth of whole inserts in my file, filed by date.

Each week, when I file the current week's inserts, I go through the OLDEST set of inserts. I discard any that are expired (usually most of them) and cut/save any that are within date. If there are lots to save, I leave them in the file. If there are just a few, I transfer them to my clipped trading file.

This way, I am only working to cull through one set of inserts at a time. I can go through one insert, and then just duplicate what I did with that one. Doesn't take much time. If you have a big backlog, you might go through 2 weeks worth each week until you catch up.

Go to the Coupon Data Base at couponing101.com. Select advanced search. Use the pull down "Source" menu. The insert or magazine will remain on this list until all the coupons are expired. When you select a source and press select, you will see a list of all the unexpired coupons and expiration dates in that insert. You can decide if any are worth saving or if you can toss or keep the whole insert.

Well...I'll be hornswoggled. How about that!!!

And, you know what??? I clicked around and realized...You can do the same thing right here on AFC! Here's the instructions:

Go to Coupon database (Under the “Coupons” tab at the top of page)
Click on drop-down menu under “Coupon Type.”
Choose “Sunday Supplement”
A drop-down menu will appear with the different type of inserts – choose the one you’d like.
A box will appear for you to enter the date of the insert you’re looking for. When you click in the box, a calendar will appear, and you can click on the date.
The coupons that are still good appear in a list, and you can decide whether you want to keep the insert for those coupons.

I do love learning new tricks!

I write the longest expiration date on the front of an insert in black marker when I get it. So I know on that date I can toss the whole thing w/out having to search through.
