| OK, i see that some of AFC members need an education in southern living....
I posted a chocolate gravy recipe tonight, in the recipe forum...and, well, apparently some of you yankees just don't git it. This is the south...we eat what we eat. Ok, now I am gonna try to edyacate youins on our philosophy of life. First off, there are some important points about true southern living. #1...A true, blood born, from the hills Arkie does not care what anyone else thinks about him/her...this goes for the hillbilly's and the more educated folk here. Most true blooded Arkies have high self esteem and when they git ready to do sumthin, eat sumthin, go somewhere, or whatever....it is because it is the thing to do, and not because it is the thing someone else is doing or think we should be doin. #2 This is the bible belt.....if youin's don't believe in prayer, speakin in tongues, and gittin saved and holy roller churches, youins is in the wrong place. #3 even folks that don't go to church, respect those that do!! there are no alcohol sales on Sunday in Arkansas...at all. #4 If you ain't got a boat, a coon dog, a 4 wheeler or a gun rack in yer truck, you is in the wrong state (and yes, I mean any or all of the 4 IN YER TRUCK) #5 we can make fun of us.....you all can't #6 difference between us and you is....we don't have to keep up with our neighbors. I may have more than them, they may have more than me...we all get along. and besides, we may be kin somehow. AND...we know our neighbor's names. #7 speaking of friendliness....we still wave to strangers on the road, without using our fingers. most folks sittin on their porches nod or wave when we drive by...even if we don't know em. #8 We don't pretend to be smarter than you all when we visit, why do you all pretend to be smarter when you all come down here? Ain't nothin' we hate worse here than a smart-*** yankee....bet ya'll can't run a trot line, load a muzzleloader or whip up a meal for 19 people that just dropped in. We do..often. #9...and speakin of jes droppin in on folks..it is not considered rude, it is flaterin when ya know folks want to come by. #10..Procrastinism is not that bad...you Yankees are way too uptight when it comes to rushing around. there is nothing wrong with kicking back and relaxing. #11 you folks live way too beyond your means...cut back and enjoy what your working your tails off to buy. You all can't enjoy that R.V. or that boat if you all are workin 7 days a week to pay for it. #12....Chocolate gravy certainly is an acceptable form of breakfast .Ok, now I hope I have enlightened you all on what Arkies think and feel about life and you all. BTW...just having fun with youins...please don't take none of this personal.

That cucumber "pickle" recipe is good - my Mom's been making those for years. Another yummy thing for them is to cut them into spears and dip them in roasted sesame seeds.

Kmarie--did you forget that YOU ALL think that appliances in your front yard are modern art. (and don't you dare deny that JH had a toilet sitting in his front yard until his girfriend moved in). I shall stick to the city where if 19 people dropped by I would a)call the police 'cause I don't know that many people in my neighborhood or b) give them directions to the nearest hotel and buffet! But what do I know. For entertainment around here we watch the Pirate (yes, actually in the Mirage pirate show) weed his back yard "mountain" in his speedo and if it is a really fun day, we vernture to strip and see how many elvis' we can hit. |

LOL, oh the toilet, LOL. It is a measurement of wealth...the more refrigerators you have on your porch and in your yard, the more money youhave, LOL!

And here I thought plastic pink flamingos were the measurement of wealth there. And if they are, I am the richest one here - I have 35 with spinny wings!

When we went vacationing and passed through the south, the weirdest thing to me was seeing crock pots in every gas station with boiled peanutes (I think thats what they were). To me that is just wrong but I never tried them, they could maybe be good.

I don't care too much for the boiled peanuts, too mushy and salty and the after effects--not very ladylike I might add. :drama: And no chitterlings--yuck..I love beans and greens, anything fried, grape cobbler pies (made with the fresh grapes that grow on the vine in the backyard to blockout the view of the neighbors or the road) homemade wine (it don't take but a sip or two),taters and creamed corn and of course grits and cornbread!! Oh and the toilet thing..I have one on my patio now we have been redoing a 2nd bathroom for about 2 years and last summer 04--we resorted to putting the old toilet on the back patio--I have been meaning to get DH to haul it off to the garbage or call the county trash to pick it up--but they want $25 just to come and get it--so I have decided I would give DH the sledgehammer and the safety goggles and let him break it up and put small pieces in the regular trash for pick up--this might take 3 weeks for us to disguise the toilet pieces in with the regular trash.... But if it's a sign of wealth them I may be planting a fern in the potty part and set it in front yard so neighbors will envy me LOL. DD might not be very happy with me doing this when her BF comes to pick her up... Oh and I haven't had coon for Sunday dinner but I really had possum once--yuck--I was about 9yrs. and I had begged my country Pawpaw to kill one on Saturday night and we would have it for Sunday dinner(my poor Mawmaw had to clean it and cook it and clean up the greasy dishes)..Never again..oh and my Mom always loved fried fish eggs-like from crappie or bass (you dip them in beaten egg and flour then deep fry them)--now this might technically be roe or caviar but I only have 2 words for it--IT'S NASTY. And the sous meat(I think this how you spell it),frog legs or cow brains and scramble eggs(I was always told it was sausage scrambled in with the eggs --but I knew better) another big YUCK!! Oh and green onions, radishes, cucumber slices, sliced tomatoes and hotpepper--all garden grown fresh is served with every meal in the South during the spring and summer. Thanks Lah123 Last edited by lah123; 01-09-2005 at 11:26 PM. |

My hubby's favorite meal; pinto beans, fried taters, polk sallet, gravy and cornbread. I have never seen the boiled peanuts...that one is new to me.
