My yankee DH heard so many "you might be a redneck" jokes that when we remodeled our bathroom, he planted ivy in our old toilet. Yep, we have a toilet with ivy settin' (not sitting) on our deck. Born, raised and love living in the south, Cheri

When we lived in south Florida I missed the South so much! Most folks there are displaced Yankees, and I can't tell you how many times I was talked down to once they heard the accent. You can make it work to your advantage though, as my DH proved again and again...my favorite was when he was in school at U of FL at Gainesville. He was fixin' to take me to dinner (lunch) and was upset to find out that the secretary had scheduled him an appt during that time. The Sec. asked if it was a special occasion and he said "Well, it's Groundhog day isn't it? In Arkansas it's a state holiday today, we have a parade, and a Groundhog Queen and you take your wife to lunch (dinner)!" For the next two years she scheduled him off on Groundhog Day... Ima Fixin' to Run for Queen this year how 'bout Ya'll uns? Momma and them will be there, Daddy will be fishing for crappie for the Fish Fry after, juss drop on by now, Ya hear? |

KellyMarie, I was born and raised in California, and I love chocolate gravy w/biscuits for breakfast!!! My mom makes the best, and she's from Holland. Don't ask me where she got the idea for chocolate gravy, but everyone I've ever mentioned this to says, "EWWWWWW!!!!" They just don't know what they're missing!

Just read the original OP and I might have to move to the South....I do love California, but we can wound a little too tight sometimes....dropping by without calling struck a chord.... Here's my story- A little while back, I knocked on a neighbor/friend's (male) door cause I was looking for my son. He proceeds to lecture me on calling before coming by, don't I have the phone #....Well, I said I wasn't really "dropping by", I just was looking for Stephen...Then we had had to debate whether or not I was "dropping by" cause look there I was standing on his porch, how could I say I wasn't dropping by.....Now before you're thinking I've lost my child, my son is 21 and his truck was in this guy's driveway. So I thought it was reasonable that there was a good chance my son was there too. Turns out he wasn't there, but geez, he could have just said that....He's an odd bird anyway, his sister lives with him and he calls her when they're both there in the same house to see if it's a good time to chat.... Oh and don't worry I found my son..... Funny post!!! |

In TN and AL, we have always had grits for breakfast, lunch or dinner....and I don't ever remember putting anything but salt, pepper, and butter on them... chocolate gravy we always put on biscuits (though we still make milk gravy with it too for the picky eaters.. we also baptise in the river when it's warm outside... "...and speakin of jes droppin in on folks..it is not considered rude, it is flaterin when ya know folks want to come by." ....true southerner's know to use the backdoor...

Just had time to read the first post so far. Thanks, Kelly, for the laugh. I'm in SW MO and have some relatives in N. Ark. This was a kick.

Yep. Ashland, KY if I remember correctly. My sister lived in that area for a little while before moving to the VA beach area.
