| First time gardener.. help!
We just bought our house this past fall and have been living in apartments before now. So, I want to garden now that I can. We have a beautiful yard - some shaded, some open. Seems like nice fertile soil. Any suggestions? What can I grow? When do I plant? How long does it take to harvest? etc etc... I'm in South Jersey (upper south, close to Central) if that makes a difference. I want to get this right so pleaaaase help! Thanks!

You should check & see what planting "zone" you live in. They are printed on any seed catalog or I'm sure you can check online. That will give you a good idea on when you can plant - usually after the last frost of the season. Some plants are tougher & those you might be able to plant a little earlier - like for me that is potatoes & peas. Seed packets usually have days to maturity on the package so you should be able to tell approximately how long before you will have produce. Good luck!

I would go to the library and start reading up on gardening. They should have a whole section. Also if you have HGTV and/or DIY network they tend to have gardening shows. Gardening by the Yard is good, Fresh from the Garden is another one that is specific to growing vegetables. Ask DIY gardening is good for beginners because they answer a lot of basic questions. They tend to have less gardenting shows on in the winter though but check out their web sites too. Also I think a good website is GardenWeb - The Internet's Garden Community You have a couple months before you can get started even if you start from seeds so for now just do a lot of research.

I picked up a couple packets today - we are Zone 3. Anyone know what the best fruits/veggies to plant around here are? I see a lot of people with tomato vines... maybe those are a biggie! thanks everyone!~

That doesn't seem right. You should be zone 6 or 7 I think. this web site has a thing to enter your zip and it should tell you your zone: Hardiness Zone Map |
