How Many of You Dream Of Living in the Country? How Many of You Dream Of Living in the Country? I am very curious about this. I have been reading about homeowner's associations, zoning, leash laws and ![]() In my neck of the woods, my dogs run free, my cats run free and my chickens run free. I currently have 9 horses and 4 on the way today. In the mornings, I get up early and grab my coffee and head for my patio. my patio has a view of the mountain to the north of me, the east and west pastures. I watch the deer and the turkey cross, some mornings I am fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the mountain lion as she slinks through the tall grass. Sometimes I see a black bear or two, once I saw a pair of weasels. We have squirrels and chipmunks, rabbits and skunks. Eagles fly over my farm and there is a majestic old baldie roosting in my east pasture. Hawks circle in hopes of snatching one of my chickens and opussoms tear apart the dump every night. In my neck of the woods I have oak trees around my house that are over 400 hundred years old. I have a creek that runs through the center of my property and a pond. I have peach trees, apple trees, plum trees, pear trees, pecan trees and grapevines. I have strawberry beds and blackberry bushes. I have planted over 2,500 flower bulbs in the last few years and have an established flower bed full of mums, azaleas, iris, tulip, roses, lily of the valley, daffodil, gladi a, lilies, anemone, daisies and so much more. It has taken my lilac forever to flourish, but, it has finally made it. My forsythias are huge and I have 2 maple trees my mother planted from seeds that we hang a hammock on.In my neck of the woods, people still wave when they drive by. The old men still gather at the coffee shop and we still have "spit and whittle" benches. People gather for fellowship and family time is considered fun. There are farmers, businessmen, old money people, new money people, and poor people that are all friends and socialize together. In my neck of the woods, people don't care if you are black, white, Mexican or whatever. People don't care if your gay, straight, an ex-con or a good ol' boy...just as long as you wave when you go by and respect our beliefs....and we will respect yours. Something about Country Living makes you appreciate all that the Lord has provided. Life is hard, but simple, it is busy, but laid back. I have never missed living in or near the cities. I don't care if a good hospital is over an hour away, if good shopping is over an hour away or if I have to drive twenty minutes to work. Stepping out on the patio on a brisk morning in my neck of the woods makes it all worth it. ![]()

I grew up in the country, and now I live in a neighborhood. I miss sitting on the porch at night listening to the frogs croak and the crickets cherp. I miss lots of things about the country. My dream would be to find at least 25 acres of beautiful land and build me a house right in the middle. ![]()

IMHO and my DH would disagree.... the country is a nice place to visit, but I much prefer the city. Yes, the people and noise get to be a bit much sometimes, but I like being in the middle of everything. We had our little spot where we had racoons, beaver, possum, a deer, a coyote and the assorted other small animals that come with country living. We also had the snakes, bugs and icky things too. Give me my mall, 2 Targets, and 5 grocery stores any day.

My DH said if we ever won the lotto for a large amount, he would want to get a log cabin somewhere like that, maybe around a lake. Sounds good to me since I have always had neighbors above me, below me or next to me. It would be nice to just lets the boys go outside and not have to worry if something was going to happen to them.

Kelly, while I LOVE calling you and hearing a rooster crow, I would be absolutely lost in the country! The bears and mountain lions would scare the **** out of me. We visit the outdoors once in a while~a planned development of cabins with a golf course and so on Honestly, I have never in my life wished to live in the country. I would miss the hustle bustle, lights and noise. I would especially miss all the stores, malls and RESTUARANTS!! Living in the burbs of a large city is the 'perfect' life for me.~actually if I get to live my dream, give me a villa in a country club area of Cabo, drink tequila and surf all day!! Now, how could you not want to live where Pacifico is $1, it is a perfect 90 degrees and the water in the upper 80's!!! Last edited by Barb; 09-11-2005 at 05:25 PM.

We want to move to the country but on a asphalt road. Couldn't handle all that dust. We need storage sheds and a big morton building and lots land for his projects and trailers. We haven't found the house we want yet. We are staying in the same school district so limited on choices. Our second choice is if this house in town comes up for sale we are gonna buy it. Its a half a block worth of property. Has a morton building with cement floor. And his the nicest 2 story victorian. I heard the inside is beautiful and its mine if it hits the market. We currently have a 2 story victorian built in 1896 that is half remodeled and needs a paint job on the outside. We have a two car garage with a project car on both sides. And he parks his 37' trailer on the side of the garage. We own the house to the south of use and we rent it out. The garage out back has one of his project cars. And then we own a house that is two houses north of use, we are still remodeling it. That has also has a garage with a project car in it. We need the space. The other reason we need a house in the country: Because I can walked naked in front of the windows if I want to!

Our dirt road isn't so bad..the house sits almost 500' from the road and there is hardly no traffic. I am the only house for 2 miles in one direction and 3 miles in the other. During deer season it gets a little busy, and of course when it's pot harvesting season...lot's of people grow pot plants up on this big ol' mountain..of course they are very discreet and usually travel out here in the midnight hours. We always know what they are up to though, LOL!

Oh I LOVE the country. My Aunt had a ranch in Ely Nevada that we used to go visit during the summer, I'm not sure how much land she had but it was the size of a small town. It was a blast! She actually had the 4H camp built on it b/c there was a hot springs. Of course my favorite part was I got to drive on it (when I was 13). She raised sheep. I always had such a blast when I went there. DH and I have always said WHEN (note: not if) we win the lottery we are going to buy some land and have a house built, then I can have all the animals I want!!! You're a lucky woman! Thank you for your story, I loved reading it!

I'm not sure I "Dream" about living in the country.. I kind of like the suburbs and am a fast paced kind of gal. But, God does it sound so wonderful how you describe your farm. I call AFC Field trips to visit. Would love to take my girls to visit the outdoors like that. At this point in my life, I could use some of that "midnight harvest" you have up on the hill too. ![]()

I don't go anywhere where I can't find a waiter who calls me "mi lady" while serving me bahama mama's! HAULING water to a tree? I saw that on Little House on the Praire once. Honestly!!! This post made me think about heading down to Mexico~oh, floating in the ocean on a raft!!! That is the BEST!!!! Kel--you should open one of those 'working farm' vacation deals. I hear city folk pay tons of money to get authentic country experiences!!~no. don't hold a room for me. I might just have to learn what a boy chicken is called before I come. ![]() Last edited by Barb; 09-11-2005 at 08:32 PM.
