So its like beef? I'm trying to cut out meat, I no longer eat it at night. BUT my husband thinks the meal is not ready until there is meat (beef preferably) and bread done too!

I wish I knew a place that sells cows or pigs. I use to get 1/2 a cow packaged and everything when I lived in Ohio. and it was cheaper than the store. I have no clue if they do this around here. But I would love to find a farmer that does this. We could go in on 1/2 a cow each.

I don't have suggestions on different kinds of meat but i do have a suggestion for variety. Recipezaar.com

I search listings using the highest "RATING" option. That way you get recipes tested and reviewed by people so that you don't waste your time making recipes that nobody has ever actually eaten and liked.

Take the kids fishing! They'll love it, and you'll have more meal choices, and much cheaper! Oh, except you'll need a filet knife for those wonderful fish you catch!

I miss those little stores too, the butchers around here are outragous with their prices!!! I go to Sams and stock up on ground beef (90% lean). They usually have reduced for quick sale packages for $1.99 a pound, a lot better than the $3.99 a pound at the butcher, and 4.25 at the grocery store!!
I usually buy the bags of frozen chicken breasts, they tend to be cheaper than fresh. Usually around $2.00 a pound on sale around here. And truthfully, I would be freezing it anyways.
I haven't done it yet but I will also be purchasing country style ribs to grill up for a few meals. Those tend to be cheap and if your family likes pork it is a good deal.
We make swiss steak at least once a month, combine it with mashed potatoes and it is extremely filling. I can't remember the price but 1.5 lb boneless beef top round steak fed my parents, my husband, myself and my DD a meal with leftovers (and we have big appetites)!

I love london broils...don't get them much down here but my freezer used to be stocked with them.I would use london broils for everything! For awhile, we only ground our own meat and used the london broils. I used them for pepper steak, stew, smothered steak, pot roast,I would even marinate them overnight and them grill them. Make whatever you would usually make with any other cut of meat with your london broils.

One of the positives of having my inlaws staying with us for the last 3 1/2 years(okay, the only positive) has been the free beef and sometimes pork we get. My FIL works for a dairy and they stock a freezer for the senior/full time employees. As for where to buy a side of beef look in the yellow pages. You might be able to find a butcher shop. Also, you might try craigs list. I live in semi-rural Idaho, so finding a farmer with beef or pork to spare can be pretty easy, but even a big city should have a butcher shop that specializes in sides of beef and such. I like to stock up on pork when it goes on sale. I especially love when the boneless country style pork ribs go on sale for $.99-$1.49 per pound.

I don't know what other things to tell you to buy besides try some turkey. I also never pay more than $2.00/lb unless I have to for meat. I only buy meat when it is on sale and then stock up the freezer. I don't buy meat very often because I only buy when on sale. So, it's not part of my regular grocery shopping. We also eat a lot of pasta in our house.

A friend of mine recommended switching ground turkey for ground beef. I guess they sell it in the freezer section in large rolls for a reasonable price. I haven't looked into it yet, but I might try to replace a meal or two that way and see how it goes (if the price is close to what I pay)

But i have 16 pounds of ground beef sitting in my freezer so it might be awhile.

Actually we but a 1/4 of a cow about every 6 months and we get steaks, (T-bone, Porterhouse), roast, cubed streak, hamburger patties, and ground beef. We figured out that we paid 2.49 a pound that included the processing, and delivery, and it is by far the best meat, we cannot eat store bought meat anymore. The best way to find out about this is to call a slaughter house and they will either get it around for you or they will give you the name of a person they get it from and go from there. But also if you have any fair coming up talk to the 4-H groups they can give you alot of info as well. As far as the rest like chicken I just get it on sale too, and pork we don't eat much of that.

I usually shop the sales on meats too. I also look for the markdown meats- those getting close to use by date- as long as you use that day or next, or freeze it right away it is fine. I also have a food saver and repackage and seal them so they last longer in the freezer.
I never pay more than $1.99 for BS chicken breasts, Stock up on Turkey near Thanksgiving When it is .29 a lb, Buy Ham around Easter. Also- any leftover mears from dinner will get repackaged and frozen - for stews, chilli, soups etc.

Country style spare ribs...yummy! When we get them, which is rare,we put the amount for a meal in a large ziploc and put in bottled Italian dressing, close it up and pop it in the freezer. Take them out to thaw when your ready to cook them, grill and put on a bit of BBQ sauce the last 15 to 20 minutes or so. The dressing makes them tender and tasty.

I am quite envious of you having so many london broils in your freezer! I like grilling one of those medium rare, slicing it into thin strips and serving it with a baked potato and salad. I prefer these to a steak. You can also make beef stroganoff with them too!Oh, and the pot roast with the cook in bag...MCkormic brand I believe, is really good too.

Tonight DH is going to pick up a commercial stand up freezer..It is 7' tall so it will never make it to the basement, it'll go in the garage. I can't wait to finally be organized with my freezer. I have a fridge/freezer in the basement and it is backed too..
Just wanted to add, Triptips are great! Every where has them (seriously I never knew about them either until Hubby told me about how cheap they were) If you can't find them, just ask the butcher guy and he should be able to help you! <3

I always go to the "clearance" section of the meat dept at Von's. they put everything that is dated for that day or the next there, at 50% off.

yesterday, I got fresh ground beef 90% lean, 6lbs family pack, for $7.00...with being 50% off

I just either freeze it right away, or use it that day...

The butcher here had never heard of tritip. Not a good sign! I can't find it in my area.

I love country pork ribs - just lay them in the crockpot and pour over your favorite BBQ sauce. Cook on low all night and you have great BBQ ribs or shred it for sandwiches.

I am so jealous of the commercial freezer!! Way to go!
