| Homemade Tortillas
So for my mom's group we're making homemade tortillas... and I got called in to work until 11am when the ladies and babies are coming. I was going to get everything ready tonight for them tomorrow. 1st- Do I have to use lard in my dough mix? i heard I could use Vegtable oil? I don't want to have to buy lard or even use it just for this.. 2nd Can I refridgerate the mix? Or is it something that I need to make and cook at that time. any other tips?

So i made my first tortilla.. well it's more like pita bread. But that was pretty easy to make. i just need either a roller of those thingy-ma-bobs that squish it. My MIL is letting me borrow those thingy-ma-bob's I know.. I can't remember the name. So I will have to try it again tonight.

Sorry. Off topic, but thought it was so cool that you're a dispatcher. My sister is one too. Mmmm....homemade tortillas. I craved them so badly throughout this pregnancy. My best friend's mom would make them for us in college and I would gobble them up plain. Good luck! |

I wish I was more of a homemade food type of person. My friend's mom used to make homemade chinese food and it was sooooooooo good!! She opened up a resturant and I eat at it at least once a month.

Tortillas, however, take a bit of practice. I made it a few times with my friend and it never did come out like her Mom's. :-(

![]() Yeah the tortillas didn't turn out very well it was more like pita bread but that was some good pita bread. My boyfriend even grabbed some tortillas when he went to the store. He said it was for the "adults" but I knew what he meant was "incase it's not edible!"

Guess I would have been more helpful to you had I noticed this thread a few days ago but thought I'd offer this advice for your future tortilla making. I'm hispanic & grew up eating & making authentic Mexican food. When I cook Mexican & make tortillas, I use the Walmart Great Value Flour Tortilla Mix. You only have to add warm water & a bit of salt. I won't eat at local Mexican restaurants because I only like authentic Mexican food that my Mom, relatives or I make, but this mix is easy, easy! You don't have to add lard or crisco, & the taste is very good. If you don't have a 'thingamajig' (rolling pin), you can roll your dough in a ball & flatten w/the bottom of a frying pan or even a plate. There's a very helpful tortilla demonstration link @ norecipes.com Just type in 'tortillas' then click on 'How to make tortillas.' There's several step by step pics on how the dough should look & how to shape, roll & cook the tortillas. I'd copy the link but am unable since I've not met the required 15 posts. Again, buy the Walmart Mix rather than messing around w/lard or crisco. Hope this helps, & have fun w/it! |

Thanks! The thingamajic isn't a rolling pin.. it's this thing that flattens the tortilla on it's own. Some are metal but most are made of wood. I can't even explain what it would look like... Ok.. I googled it and it's a Tortilla press.. ah..so simple yet..not. =)

| We used baking soda and warm milk. That is what the recipe called for so I used it. It seems weird to use water.

![]() LOL...oh sure...tortillas for the "adults." Oh great, this thread is triggering my craving for tortillas again! Maybe I'll try my hand at homemade tortillas again after all these years. What's funny is that I'm specifically craving homemade tortillas....not just Mexican food.
