| What are your "made from scratch" must haves?
What foods do you have to make yourself and can not stand to buy the store ready varieties? For me the top one would have to be mashed potatoes!! Those pouches of flake potatoes make me feel soo... I have tried adding and adding and adding things to them to try and give them some hope, but no luck ![]() Second would have to be alfredo sauce. I can eat the jarred ones, but I found a simple recipe a few months ago for homemade alfredo and it is soo easy, quick and yuuuummmmy! I'd have to be in a serious pinch to use the jarred ones! What about you? |

I agree there is just something about potatoes in a box I can't do. That said there is one receipt that I make that calls for mashed potatoes flakes that my nephew's like. Also, sauce I make my own. I'm sure there are other things I just can't think of at the moment.

Honestly, I make most foods from scratch, but I have a absolute passion for cooking! Grew up in a first generation Italian household of cooks/chefs so there ya go! LOL I do have things on hand for quickness at times, like frozen pizza, etc.. I agree, those instant potatoes of ANY kind make me want to puke!!

Homemade chicken pot pies! I love to make them, the kids love them, and they aren't loaded with salt like the frozen ones. And I agree, real mashed potatoes only in this house! I have a recipe for a fish soup that I am trying out tomorrow night and it says to use some pre-packaged mashed potatoes in it (strange, I know) but I cannot do it! I bought some small potatoes to use in it instead. I don't know if this counts as 'from scratch', but I only make popcorn on the stove. No microwave popcorn. Tastes so good!

French fries. I have to have real potatoes that I cut myself before frying. I keep trying different brands and I always come back to the real thing. Meatloaf and other meat dishes that have mushed up ingredients. I like being able to taste the ingredients. Chili. I prefer homemade because fresh ingredients are used I do like the chili masters white chicken chili, but the others either need a lot of doctoring or they get eaten by my iron-stomach DH. Quote:
I do get the canned sauces a lot and doctor them up, even though I know they're packed with salt too. Frozen pizza too-- it has to have a lot of extra peppers, onions, and other tasty bits added. |

I've added the instant mashed potatoes to potato soup to thicken it up and it usually tastes pretty good.

You can use the potato flakes in potato bread and also use them to dredge fish in before frying (it's really good!) |

I make a lot from scratch, what I can think of off the top of my head are: stuffing (nobody likes it from the box) maccaroni and cheese (haven't had it from a box in over 25 yrs) mashed potatoes lasagna (occasionally will by stoufers) cakes pies I know there's more, I just can't think right now... |

but it doesn't really need them!-1 8oz bar Cream Cheese -1/2 Cup of Parmasean Cheese -Garlic Powder -Pepper -2 cups Milk (I use canned milk, gives a much richer taste, but the original recipe just used milk!) Combine the cream cheese and milk in a sauce pan and whisk over medium heat until the cream cheese is smooth. Add the garlic powder and pepper and cheese, again wisk and boil for five minutes. It will thicken once you remove from heat! Adjust the garlic powder and pepper to your personal tastes. This does NOT taste cream cheesy at all- trust me I don't prefer things that have that strong cream cheese taste! I also use a bit more cheese because we loooove cheese! |

All soups!...I've never cared for canned soups. Mac-n-cheese! Biscuits. I just enjoy making 'em! I like making my own Alfredo sauce, too. |

I'm a scratch cook so everything is pretty much fresh with exception for a few quickie things like frozen pizzas. Fried Chicken Mashed Potatoes Potato Salad Gravy Hamburger Helper- super easy and so much better for you! I just brown some hamburger, add noodles, canned soup and or tomatoes, a few extra cans of liquid (water or milk) seasongings and whatever veggies you fancy. Then walk away, it's done in a few hours.
