They last a pretty long time when fridged properly. If they are within the same week or 10 days, I'd use them. For that matter, almost all food is good after its exp date. You just have to use good judgement on its taste, smell, consistency properties, etc... I've had milk a week out of date that was still good, and I've had it within date (two still to go to exp) and it was already yogurt! YUK!

THe carton says sell by Dec 30, I have two left in there and that is really all I need. So should I assume it is ok to use for baking ( meatloaf) Since i'm not a cook I guess my judgement wouldnt' be the best. i"m assuming if it stinks than yea it's bad but taste? Do you actually taste the raw egg? yuck. |

Take a bowl of water and put the egg in it. If it floats, it is no good. If it sinks, its good to use.hth's

YUUUUUUUKKKKkkkkk.... NO, do not eat the raw egg. Luv2sav had a good method too, for checking eggs specifically...(Previous post). I meant that you can check varous items by either taste or smell, or consistency... probably not all of them all of the time/at tthe same time. Use your best judgement. If its something you wouldn't normally eat raw, don't use the "raw taste" as a barometer. For sure, it WILL taste nasty then.

Eggs last up to a month after expiration date as long as they have been in the fridge. |

I have used them even longer after the exp. date.(3 months) If I open the egg and it don't smell and looks ok it's good to me. If you go to a store and grab eggs for dying alot of them float even if they aren't expired so I don't go by that.

I always used to forget which was which, is the floating egg ok, or is it the one that sinks? So now, if the egg floats, I call it the "dead man float" and I know it's no good! I have to make everything in my life a play on words, otherwise I'd forget everything!

| Well it was ok, kind of bland, I got the recipe from allrecipes.com. The reviews did say that they added additional spices as turkey is bland and without adding extra stuff it would taste bland. I guess I didn't add enough of what the reviewers on there suggested because I was afraid to add too much of something. The didn't give exact amounts of stuff.... Dh liked it , he said it felt like he had a healthy meal , since it was not greasy or salty etc. I made mashed potatos ( boxed ) and corn for a side. I"m glad he said it was healthy because that was the goal as I have high blood pressure and try to use as little sodium as possible and i'm having my gall bladder out so I can't add tons of stuff to food either cuz it will irritate. What was funny is that ds is picky and he ate it sooo fast and every bite he would sayyy mmmm mmmm, He is 18 months old. Dh said if NIcholas likes it then you know its good , he also said I'm too hard on myself and even though I don't like to cook and don't know he said I do a good job. Thanks for asking. |

I just found out the other day here on AFC that you can FREEZE eggs! I certainly didn't know that. "Cheri" a member here had posted this in one of the threads...don't remember which though! Maybe next time if they are close to expiration you can just pop them in the freezer. Don't know the details about how to freeze the eggs...just know that you can! HTH

I've always bought eggs when they're BOGO here and used them up to 4 months after use by X date. I've not encountered problems so far. if by chance, they have a funky smell, I'll discard them. I've made a lot of egg custard (leche flan to us pinoys. yum!) and it always turned out perfect with the caramelized top.

glad someone gave you the heads up as eggs, properly cared for can last a very, very long time..and when I raised chickens you had no idea when the egg was laid if you found an out of the way nest.. the float trick works as when the egg decomposes it produces gasses.. so when really fresh it will lay on it's side on the bottom..sometimes this is tooooo fresh to make things like a hard boiled egg as the peel will stick.. if it tips up on point on the bottom..it's great and perfectly useable floating around anywhere else..pitch it..the gases are being made... and just like others noted..you can freeze eggs..when my chickens would go berserk I'd either scramble a bunch, add a bit of salt and freeze in breakfast sized amounts...or would separate so I just had egg whites (I try to eat pretty low fat) and would feed the yolks to the dogs and/or make dog biscuits.. |

In case anyone wonders the reason they float is that they build up gases inside the egg when it goes bad. |

Wow great thanks everyone. I was always told to crack the egg in a cup and check to see if it had a 'smell' to it.

| Yeah, it'll stink too...I'd rather not smell it, thank you! Also a lot of cooks crack their eggs into a seperate cup before putting them into the bowl with the rest of the ingredients because sometimes you will find a fertilized egg - which is disgusting, you'll see blood in it. You don't want that in your cake even if it isn't smelly.

| Check out this website by the Egg Safey Council -- it even says it's safe to use them 4-5 weeks beyond the "stamped" date. Welcome to The Egg Safety Center.

Thanks momster! That's amazing ~ I guess they're hoping you'll throw them out and buy more? Crazy. "*Julian date: usually on the short side of the carton, represents the consecutive days of the year with the number 001 as January 1 and December 31 as 365" Now that is interesting! I can't wait to go to the store and check the cartons now. Last edited by Moggy; 10-05-2009 at 04:02 PM. Reason: added stuff |
